A “Dead Stick” should only be considered “Dead” if it means you are not paying much attention to it. If you find your Dead Stick means there is flat out no action on the hook/bobber set-up you might want to reconsider your options. Here on Rainy this year for some reason a hook and minnow has been grossly outproduced by jigging spoons. To further the thought process Jigging spoons with full shinners have lately been a presentation of choice for big fish while Jiggins spoons and minnow heads are icing the majority of eating fish. Next time out rig up two rods. Two different colored Lightning spoons. When drilling holes in your portable drill a series of 3 holes a total of about 3 feet apart. Drop your Ducer down the middle hole. Jig your minnow head on your right hand considering that your right handed, and your full shinner on our left hand. Jig the shinner 4-5 feet off bottom. Jig the minnow head within 2 feet of the bottom. The Minnow head will be the shorelunch producer in theory. The Shinner will attract the big girls which will often give you a second or two to drop your other rod in order to give the beans to that monster. Don’t get caught trying to convince the monsters this time of year for a bite of cake when they want the whole thing, yet don’t pass up 14-16 inch walleyes either!! I tell people that most everyday I feel I get at least 1 shot at a big fish. I in no way want to screw that chance up with a mediocre presentation. Subtle things can and will make the difference of catching or seeing big fish on your graph.

But if I win the lotto, can come up and work for ya??? Again great tip, there are some places over here where we can still give that a try!!!

    Nice tips Chris!

I was wondering if your using live shiners or preserved ones, and where do you like to hook a whole shiner when using it on a jig? Last time i was up there we searched for 3 days trying to find live shiners, my buddy ended up buying some preserved ones but we never ended up trying them.

I ended up doing pretty good on a bobber set up, I had a setup goin similar as the one your talking about except 1 of my lines was a bobber and I had my gain set just high enough where I could see my jig and still see my minnow reading on my flasher from the bobber line. When a fish came into my jig and didn’t take it or was just under my minnow of my bobber line but wouldn’t take it I’d grab my bobber line and pull it away from the fish and they’d smack it right from my hands. Only one or two of the fish actually took the bobber down as it sat still. Seems like the Rainy eyes like to chase thier prey.

Keep droppin the hammer on those fish!

    Hey Guys!!

As far as the Shinners go I definately would use live ones if you can find them. Might have hit us at a bad time. I hook the shinner right through the meat of the back and pump it up and down through the water column. That shinner really draws big fish. Of course as a big fish closes I rise slightly and then let it sit for the ambush!!
