Thanks Kelly we had a good time again and I always like BS’in with ya, nice price and nice folks can’t go wrong stayin at the Falls Motel.

We were hopin to run into RD Chris but he eluded us like a monster walleye. Thought I might of seen him out there Tues but with the snow and winds I really couldn’t see that far, then Wed we headed out to Dryweed and didn’t see a soul.

The snow up there right now is awesome, riding sled was real fun, we covered some ground and didn’t hit any slush. Its crazy just a few hours south there’s no snow but all of a sudden as u get closer to International Falls boom there’s tons.

The fishing was on and off for us, that might of been from the storm front we were in or just the plain fact that a couple days is not enough time, your head spins in circles as you look at the gps tryin to figure out where you want to set up. There’s just endless structure and the spot on the spot could be anywhere lol. 2 of us were only second timers and the other 2 guys were Rainy rookies.

Me and the other 2nd timer did decent, the first day he had the most action and I caught a couple, no keepers though except for he caught a pretty nice pout. The second day I had good action with a couple keeper eyes, couple little guys, a slot eye and a beast of nature that broke my line. Not sure what it was but it hammered a big rainbow I had set about 2 1/2 ft off bottom and when I set into it, it didn’t move. I got it half way up where it took a couple runs back towards bottom then made a nice run and SNAP. It made a clean cut between the hook and sinker so it was definatly a toothy critter. All I caught in that spot all day was walleyes..my luck it was the pig but I never got a look so it could of been anything…one thing forsure it was heavy.

Everyone had alot of lookers and missed a bunch, as for the rookies they got skunked. I’m sure the scenery and snowmobiling made up for it. We just need more time!!!!!!

I might see ya 1 more time yet this winter Kelly, if not expect me coming up this spring…have a good one.

    Hey Fishing Guru!!

Fishing was awesome over the weekend as I had the wedding party out there with lots of action and some big fish. Then the weather did a 180 on us, and the fish obviously were not fired up about that. That is the tough thing fishing for a couple days versus living here. When major cold fronts blow in or you get strong East winds or BOTH… You play cards or have a cold one with friends in town. I witnessed exactly what you are describing on the ice ove the last 2 days. Got some fish, and marked a ton of big fish. Nice 23 inch eye yesterday, but for the most part the fish were what I call “Weather Lethargic” Destined to the bottom, and not fired up for anything. That will change, and the fish will continue to feed all the way up to the spawn, but the fish are still making minor migration movements as the Winter progresses!! Toughest thing about fishing is when you have them pinned down, but can’t get them to bite. Fortunately for us the Pout were on, and my boys put the hammer down on some monsters in just a couple hours of fishing before they had enough fun!! LOL!! As I fished with some of my boys yesterday we watched big fish after big fish sniff and leave. Personally if I open the refrigerator door 5 times, you can bet I’m heading back to the couch to watch the latest In Depth Outdoors shoot with something to eat!! No matter how full I am!! LOL!!

If you hit Dryweed you surely experienced the vastness of Rainy Lake. I bet you didn’t see anyone for miles. The fishing can be tremendous in that direction, and you definately fished a tough weather pattern. With that being said can you ever go wrong fishing waters like Rainy Lake?? I would rather search and destroy fish any day of the week rather than fish off a city block with 42000 other anglers!! Just me I guess!! LOL!

It sure doesn’t help any that we always get a late start either, we drove all over trying to find shiners but every store was out. We never actually get set up and fishing until about 10-10:30, everytime as soon as I drill my two holes and get set up I read tons of fish and I pop a couple off right away then it slows down. Personally when you only have 2 days to fish I’d like to be set up and ready as it’s just getting light.

Its also tough to get motivated when it’s cold, snowing and windy, makes it tough to drill and move around when your finally toasty warm in the portable. I wouldn’t read any fish for awhile but in the spot I set up in it seemed like 3/4 of the fish I did read bit. They’d chase the clown vertiglo and if they chased but turned around I’d slowly lift my bobber rainbow setup and they’d smack it right in my hand. I put my gain on the vex up just enough so I could see my bobber minnow and read my jig at the same time so I could tell when fish were sniffin either set up lol.

It would slow down and I’d tell myself I’ll give them 20-30 minutes and if I don’t read or catch a fish I’m gonna move, I’d stare at GPS glancing occasionally at the vex and find my new spot and start to pack up and boom I’d catch an eye or miss a fish that would make me stay put. That happened 3-4 times as I was loadin up to move I’d pop one off or miss one..just enough action to stay put I guess.

The challenge, solitude, and scenery on Rainy is what keeps us coming back, we could choose any lake in MN but Rainy keeps pullin us back. If the fishing slows down or you start to get cramped up in the portable you can jump on your sled and ride for miles in any givin direction and not even see another human…I love that. For me fish is the bonus but the experience is what matters most. Throw in just knowing you have a legit chance at a state record eye at any time. As always I want to jump back in the vehicle and head back up right now.

Anyone that lives up there is blessed forsure. I’d rather be a local then a visitor.

Hey Diddy, You’ll catch WAY WAY more fish once you get some electronics. I can’t even imagine fishing without one. You get to see when fish are under ya and how they respond to what your doing or using, fishing blind is crazy. Out of the 10 or so fish I landed not even counting the ones that got off I’d say I probably would of caught maybe 1 of those without my electronics, its key.

I hear ya, I’d hate to have to have my baits set up next to Jason as he’s trying to learn how to jig!!

There probably wasn’t an eye within a block in either direction when he started his techniques

Electronics and setting up by yourself is the way to go imo…we could cover more area and different depths to find a pattern thats working. Time to get some electronics and your own clam!!
