It’s about 35 miles by boat. Probably similar by ice/snow. Have done it a dozen times by boat but never by snowmachine.
In case you’re wondering about conditions right now I just talked to the head park maintenance guy last night at a hockey game and he said they won’t be grooming on the lake this year because there’s not enough ice. They’ve measured as little as 5 inches on the way to Kettle Falls. The trail is marked and it’s been packed with snowmachines. He also said a couple locals traveled to the east end recently to fish and never drilled a hole because they spent the whole time dealing with slush.
People keep reasoning because we’ve had a lot of -20 to -40 the slush is freezing up. Slush isn’t everywhere and it has improved in the areas where there is traffic but otherwise there is simply too much insulation from the snow to freeze most of the slush. Unless you are prepared to deal with 10-20″ of snow with 2-8″ of slush underneath …………….. well, a word to the wise is sufficient.
Not saying don’t be adventuresome but be prepared. A week ago park maintenance “just happened” to come across a 65 yr old guy alone on an interior lake whose machine had broken down and was stuck.
