OK… This is hard to even talk about since it is so fresh. Trying to effectively transition with the big fish as past haunts get new interest from anglers I made a subtle move. After getting set up I was in all honesty really looking for a measurement of baitfish activity along with of course Walleye. Had a fair amount of activity coming through to reassure it was a good move. Noticed lots of high flyers. Got a nice 18.5 and a nice 24.5 and then……..It Happened!! I AM A BIG FISH HUNTER, and those hard core anglers know you get few chances at a TRUE FREAK OF NATURES. I watched a huge red blob streak up and down high in the water column. I raced my Glow Orange/Chartruesse Lightning spoon above the mark. It tears after me, and I cat and moused it until I thought it was going to pound me until it just faded away. Then I see it a few feet down, and it fires back at me. Mimicking the activity of the fish I jigged/zigged and Zagged crazy like trying to mimick a freaked ciscoe ready to be a meal. Once again it dropped back lower in the water column without hitting me. Trust me this fish was experiencing the “Walleye Whisperer” at his best trying to sweet talk this fat honey home. Then at once it happened….. I decided to keep the bait moving up the water column not slowing the get-away speed this time, and BAM!!I Yelled “LIGHTS OUT FOR YOU!!!” This fish smoked the lightning right out of the spoon!! I slammed the fish stuck it real hard, and felt nothing but heavy pulsating action and then big head shake after big head shake. It peeled a bit of drag straight down as I assured her that is ok you’ll be back, and then made some progress upwards. The Freak of a fish hit me 8 feet under the ice in an undisclosed depth I lean over the hole (from experience) trying to get a glimpse of the fish when I see the Tail of all Tales!! It pumps her tail so hard a flow of water is driven up the hole as it peels out, and……..SPITS UP MY SPOON!!! Look I understand the proof is in the puddin!! Trust me I do! There are no pics or words that can describe the feeling of being so close yet so far away. When I hooked the fish I hollered get the camera this is a freak. Well we digitalized a couple nice fish, and the only picture of the tug of war battle with the Monster Walleye was the aftermath of Rainydaze not having one of his most Happydaze!! Having a moment of silence collecting scattered thoughts of disbelief. Is what it is, and noone can take true measurements under the ice, but if I were a betting man I go 30 hands down, but would honestly say 32-34 based on the flat out PADDLE of a tail it had and the huge white tip that gave me a wave good bye. The fish didn’t break my line, but most certainly broke my heart!!
May the fish of your dreams come and bite your hook, may the fish gods of Rainy be so kind to grant you a look!
