A couple of buddies and myself are thinking about heading up to Rainy or Red. Any suggestions on where to stay? We got portables. We might want to rent a house if it’s cold. Thanks, Whitespot

First off welcome to the site

I can tell if was really cold this past weekend on Red, I can’t imagine trying to stick it out in a portable at least not overnight, I’d look for a rental or at very least a motel room for the overnight. Check the URL forum for more info.

Given the choice ( I wasn’t) I’d much rather fish Rainy, always have a of chance of catching the fish a personal best walleye, not sure there is a great chance of that on URL, for me I wouldn’t think twice I’d head to Rainy.

Good luck lets us know where you go and how you do.

    Welcome to IDO Whitespot!!

I just finished the latest report on the walleye fishing on Rainy Lake might want to check that out. LIGHTS OUT FOR BIG FISH!! with some good eating fish too. A lot of our customers have been renting a sleeper shack or a day shack, and then some are also bringing portables. If it is as cold as it has been the permanents are in good areas, and you can fish in your T-shirt!! I try to point out nearby humps in which we are doing well on as well, so you can mobilize with your portables also. 26.5 inch walleye this morning. Look forward to fishing with you. Feel free to PM me to work out your dates/planning for your trip!!

It look like it’s going to warm up. We’re going to URL one day and Rainy the next. Where is the best lake access for us to drive out??? We are on a budget. Thanks, Whitespot

There are a few plowed roads at this point. Rainy Lake Marine has a road that goes into Sand Bay, Tilson Creek Public access has a road Plowed, and There is a smaller road around SHa-Sha resort. Sand Bay is the most utilized, then Tilson, then SHa SHa. All depends on where you want to fish. All areas have been producing pretty well. Just got an email from my buddy showing pics of a 29 inch walleye pulled from Sand Bay. That would be the Rainy Lake Marine road. Hope this helps.
