    Go Big or stay home??

When fishing waters that are teaming with suspended baitfish like RAINY or LOTW… It is imperative to closely watch the entire water column on your electronics. Often times you will see a fish come through just off the bottom, and while your working that fish will see a mark come in suspended. WHAT DO YOU DO?? Employ the “Go Big or Stay Home”. Most often the dominate fish “BIG GIRL” will take the aggressive position in the water column thus the mark up higher is; A (big enough to be eating ciscoes and smelt) and; B (Not afraid of a bigger fish eating them). I always race to the bigger fish. Another reason is that the fish high in the water column is very likely feeding, and roaming while the fish on the bottom often times is just “Hangin!” Employ this and YOU WILL catch more BIG fish!! Don’t get caught working the 11 inch walleye on the bottom which in all fairness is scared to death of the big fish lurking above, and is not in the snacking mood because of it.

Now assuming you put the hammer down on that big fish treat her with the special care. Have digital cameras ready to roll, and take quick pictures. Be careful so the fins of the fish do not freeze. Even keep the fish in the water by the tail until your ready for a quick picture. Letting the fish lay on the ice while you head back to the truck for your camera is a NO NO. Keep conservation in the front of your mind, and Rainy Lake will continue to lead the way for growing BIG FISH!!

Great tips …This is very true on LOW. Those suspended girls just about take your pole outa’ your hand when they hit! RR
