A buddy and me are planning a trip up there summer, never been there before. Just wondering the best month to come up there for walleyes? Is it usaully fairly easy to find a island to camp or are they pretty filled up? If you find one to camp on is it safe to leave your stuff there for a couple days? Is there a better part of the lake then another for walleyes? Thanks for the help.

    Hi Nitro,

May-October can be fantastic walleye fishing. Just depends on what stage they are in. May-June will have you fishing around spawning grounds and first breaks from shorelines. July-October will have fish congregated heavily on mid-lake humps…. July/August tends to have more stability in the weather patterns thus offering a better chance of timing a hot bite. Sept/Oct is my favorite months for trophy walleyes.

Campsites tend to be more full June-August, but usually will be able to find a place to camp, and I’m not too familiar with stuff being stolen. Have to believe thieves would target other areas than campsites… Unless your talking about Bears!! LOL!!

VNP (Voyageurs National Park) has maps illustrating designated campsites, and can fill you in with camping permits…

Rainy is a fishermans paradise!! You’ll fall in love with it!! We feel very fortunate to be able to enjoy this magnificent body of water all year!!

Ive been fishing Rainy my whole life. Not a local, but we launch out of the falls and fish the far side of the brule. Dont know about camping as we have a cabin on a island. If you want some good spots PM me Ill talk to you and can give you GPS to some of the humps we fish.

I have been going to Rainy Lake for years with my son and father-in-law. We head up the 3rd week in August. We go for walleyes, pike and smallies, here are a couple of fish we have caught. Generally the walleyes have been between 20’ to 30’, the pike are in the weeds and the smallies relate to the deep rocky shoreline. We stay at Camp Ontario on high rock island.
