Looks like the weather is finally going to break, should be able to get out and chase those big eye’s again this weekend.Iam a big fan of drop shotting for walleye’s in the summer. This is absolutly a deadly presentation in the open water months.I have been using this system this winter for the first time.Drop shotting really allows you to take the info you are getting from your flasher and fine tune your presentation, which allows you to keep your bait exactly in the strike zone. This is just another method to think about when the fish get fussy.

    HEY BB,

Maybe you could describe the Drop Shot rig, and how it can be more effective than say a traditional split shot and hook rigged. I bet there are many people whom may be interested!!

Hey Daze, the rig is simple,a standout hook tied directly to the line , I like to leave about 3 foot of line underneath the hook for my sinker. The sinkers are made specifically for drop shotting and can very easily be adjusted to the exact depth i want my bait at.For instance if i want my bait 12 inches off the bottom, i simply set the sinker 12 inches below the hook. This allows me to keep my bait precisely in the same spot that the fish seem to want.I believe this method keeps my bait in the strike zone , primarily in front of the fishes nose at all times.

It takes alot of the guess work out of it for me.I like to experiment with the minnows too sometimes i hook them through the nose if that does not seem to trip there triggerr i will tail hook them. The only difference i can see between this system and the split shot rig is that when a minnow is hooked on the split shot rig it has more freedom to swim around, which i agree can be very effective ,it also lets the minnow hide in the rocks or other structure when fishing near the bottom.Once again drop shotting is not the miracle presentation, just another method to add to your arsonal when those hogs get fussy.

    Great info BB!!

You can bet I’ve employed this technique as well, and seems very effective just as you stated “When the bite is tough” Seems your explanation is very logical in that it gives your minnow or bait less “Wiggle” room. In the past I often times will inch split shots closer to the hook for customers if the fish become tight lipped, and this would be even more extreme!! Thanks much for sharing Buddy!!

Sounds like the travel channel is venturing north to lay witness to “Ice Box” days. I’ve offered to take them out in the Daze Inn for a bit to show them what real men do when it is 42 below!! We’ll see if they are up for it!! LOL!!

FYI Buddy!! Lets see what else we can plan for “Ice Box” days in the future. I’d like to see if we can make it an event that really draws in the people it should. Heck we are the definition of Winter!! Maybe outside bars constructed of Ice tops, Crown an Ice Box Queen, Hole drilling contests, fishing contests, sled dog race, Snow shoe races… A little imagination?? Gotta believe with a little groundwork we could drum up some serious sponsor dollars as Ifalls really should be a lay up for ad dollars. Heck Serve Ice Hole, invite all the Ice fishing companies to show there stuff where it is actually tested out… You get my drift!! We’ll talk about it!!

If the Falls ever decides to form a marketing team we’ll have to apply.

This town needs that kind of imagination which would be a serious change in strategy and thinking if it is to survive the next 20 years.
How many out of town guests does Ice Box days bring in? Would 100 be a stretch? If you exclude people who have no family or previous connection up here it would.

    Hey Uffda!!

Ready to start chasing those slabs pretty soon?? How ya been!! Need to talk rods if your still in the business. Yes I agree entirely. Not trying to be demeaning to any of the powers to be as they work very hard, and are likely overworked and underpayed. With that being said would you come up for what we have going on?? Hmnnnn Bridge, a Christian band, and Texas hold-em event to drive 300 miles?? Come on this is a Festival!! This should be a celebration of the freaking crazy people who live in the coldest destination in the United States. The toughest of tough guys. Polar Plunges, Iced Bikinis… Laugh in the face of Mother Nature for the whole world to see!! With a little edge the operation, and possibly ruffling a few feathers people would be coming for Mexico for this event!! People will travel for a good time, and the residual business would be unbelievable. Sorry narrow minded thinking freaks me out!! YES YOU WILL OFFEND A FEW!! People don’t travel for BRIDGE Tournaments!! YIKES!!
