i just booked a week at Kettle Falls. I waited too long so late June was the only option. Hopefully not too late. I suppose I’ll split my time between Rainy and Namakan depending on how things go. Since the park service has to trailer your boat from one to the other I’ll probably just split the week 50/50 between the 2 depending on fishing. Anyone spend much time there? I fished the west end of Rainy twice last year but don’t have much experience with east end. I have never fished Namakan but spent a little time in Kab. They all seem so similar. I’ll definitely be doing more research on the bite as it gets closer. I’m guessing the east end of Rainy could be decent since it is so isolated. Any comments welcome.

Rainy in June

The wife and I have been doing the houseboat thing on Rainy in June for the past 3 years. Started out as a honeymoon; now were hooked. Great fishing on the East end; have never fished West end. We like the isolation. And the lower fishing pressure. Like any other place; weather plays big part and water level. 2 years ago water level was 4.5 feet low. Made it quite hazardous to say the least. But its all part of the adventure. Hope for good weather and id say fish the many reefs or humps. If there is good current in the river heading to Kettle falls; the fishing can be awesome. If no current; skip it. We will be in that area from 6/25 thru 7/2. Cant wait to go to Kettle falls and play a game of pool on that awsome pool table.
March 11, 2005 at 8:16 pm #349000That’s exactly when we will be there. We’ll have to hook up and play some wacky pool.

gbMarch 21, 2005 at 4:32 pm #351186We are staying in the villas at the falls. Never housboated up there.
May 3, 2005 at 9:12 pm #361021Suzuki…I will be there from the 22nd thru the 26th. We have 17 guys going up…lmao…We have the top half of one of the villas and some rooms at the lodge for the trip. Then we all have to move up to the hotel on the last night, as they ran out of room. Some of us have to sleep on the floor..boo hoo….We should have a pretty good idea where the fish are by the time you get there. They said if you have a villa they would let you put a tent up. I might have to beg and plead with you to let us put a tent up for that Sat. night by your villa…

Sounds like a good time in the making. Back in 96 or 97, we rented a houseboat in mid June from Doherty’s and traveled east as far as we could, but still in US waters. We then fished the entire week in Cormorant Bay (Canadian waters) area and did real well on the walleyes and smallies. Our best day was right around 100 walleyes for the day pitching plastics to some wind swepts island areas and rock reefs. We did not tangle with any big walleyes, but lots of fun with fish from 17″-19″ and an occassional 22″-24″ fish. Some of the reports of the bigger fish during this time came from rigging deep 25-40 feet in the mid bay areas reefs. The smallies should be on their beds or just wrapping up a spawn cycle. Your timing should be prefect for those fish!!
Sounds like a good time for you guys. Have fun!

June 15, 2005 at 7:18 pm #368481Suz,the way it sounds from the bite so far the later the better. So far the bite has been real slow in the area.I’m going to Kab/Nam on the 18th.I think it is always better to fish this chain of lakes early to late June and avoid it opener to June 1st.This coming from a lot of years there. We used to have a cabin on Kab till the park came in.The slot has worked well for me and fish are definitely bigger.I like east Rainy better and fish US side only.Nam,Sandpoint,Crane are all good, just a matter of picking one and go at it. Good luck! Hybes
June 20, 2005 at 12:31 pm #369145Hey guys…I am in the process of planning a trip for over the 4th weekend. Are the camp spots on the Kab first come first serve? Whats the traffic like over this weekend? Is it going to be worth the 4 hr drive? Any advice for camping in this area would be awesome!! Thanks
June 20, 2005 at 10:11 pm #369273yea the sites are first come first serve. leaches would do the trick for walleyes. casting raps for the bass. traffic on kab isnt to bad since there isnt any public access on the lake. but it will be nuttier than normal since it is the forth. have fun. im heading up the first part of august.
June 26, 2005 at 4:59 pm #370122All campsites are first come basis and you need to register at a visitor center or public launch. There are 3 public launches on Kaby, one at the narrows and Ash River. I just got back and fishing was slow.Weather was to nice.Caught some nice eyes in the 18-26in.range but few in the slot. Leeches were the best bait to use.Traffic was’nt bad but I would get on the lake early to get a good campsite. Good luck!
