Rainy Lake Ice?

There is plenty of Ice on Rainy Lake as of today…uuugh! BUT, the good news is that if you are up for a late ice trip for huge crappies for example….now is the time.

I have found crappies still located in their primary wintering areas. Mostly over soft bottom basins where insect activity has certainly increased of late. The bite has been steady depending on weather of course, but if you want a papermouth for the wall, Rainy is a good bet.

Don’t be afraid to use considerably larger offerings for these big mouthed slabs. Something that allows you to stick and move and gets in front of the fish quickly. Yes, you can get ’em on tungsten, yes you can get ’em with soft plastics…just get it to them quickly and don’t be afraid to be aggressive! My best bait has been the new CrystalEyes jigs in 1/4oz….that’s right 1/4oz. You’d think I was fishing walleyes. If you want a huge black crappie don’t be afraid to go BIG.

Great report, Looks like ice out will be late again this year. I was up there last May and it was very wet. Most fish were still deep or a long run to moving water. Plan on going up again in early June depending on the weather.
