A little out of season, but my mind is already thinking of May already. Can anyone from/familiar with the area let me know if there is a public landing with a parking area in Black Bay on Rainy? Is the one by the visitors center open to the public to use (this would be the week before memorial day)? Thought it might be a fun side trip if we want to do something different while we are up at Kab this spring. 90% chance we won’t do it, but want all the ducks in a row as they say in case we want to give it a whirl.

Yep the VNP ramp is right on the entrance bay to Black Bay. IMO it’s the best ramp I have ever used! If you come up after you launch a right turn takes you to Black Bay and a left turn takes you to Sha Sha for lunch. 1/4 mile from the launch area.

What are you running for a boat? Something unique is do the mechanical portage at Kettle Falls hotel. That takes you from Kab. / Namikan to the East end of Rainy by boat. If that interests you shoot me a PM or call my cell 612-859-0706. You will need a good map or chip to get there unless you follow me up there.

Yes, it is a very nice launch at the visitor center. We caught nice crappies a little earlier in the year in black bay with walleye fishing a short boat ride away. Good luck!

Make sure you have a Lakemaster or Navionics chip in your graph. Blackbay can play havoc with lower units.

That was my thought, chasing the crappies I’ve heard about in black bay. The two times I’ve been to Rainy we never went into black bay. I had heard about the rocks in there so I was assuming we’d probably take my boat (since its 13 years old and not 2 years old), however that would mean I need to pick up a woods/rainy LM before we go (I’d eventually buy one anyway).

Brian, I wanted to make that trip too to KF, I doubt my wife will let our son go for that long of a trip yet (18 months) so I’m guessing it will wait a few years unless I go without them. Can that run be made without needing an RABC? We plan on bringing both boats this year so we will have my 1600 pro sport lund and dads 175 Alum. Navigator.

Really looked forward to the trip last year because it was my chance to introduce my parents to walleye fishing and the VNP area. Pumped again this year as I really want to get my son out on some short trips close to the resort, I think he is going to enjoy it and try to put a few fish in the boat for him to see. That and I love that area, one of these times I’m just going up there and not coming back.

You won’t need a RABC pass to go through Kettle Falls. Although Canada is just a stones throw away! Keep in touch as I’ll likely be up there at that time. Did you take everybody over to Ellsworth gardens on Kab. last year? That’s a decent place to stretch your legs and isn’t real far from the Kab. resorts.

If you have your heart set on Black Bay then trailering to the VNP launch is the way to go. Sha Sha is a must do for lunch.

We didn’t last year, its on the list of things we should do this time. (Weather kept the rest of the gang from wanting to go out for the first half the week) I don’t know if I’m going to get everyone to do this trip again after this year so it might be the last family trip there for a while.
