Rainy report

Just got back last night from a few days on the north arm of Rainy. Can’t say how much I enjoy being up there!

The main goal was to fish for pike and to pick up a walleye here and there. Sometimes the wally was intentional and most of the time they were dumb luck.

We fished saturday through wednesday. Some success but some really slow fishing too. Started off with a cold front and an all day rain on saturday. Still saturday, sunday, and monday were okay.

Another cold front on Tuesday with 30+mph winds kind of killed it for us. For safety reasons we had to stay out of anything not sheltered. Picked up a fish here an there but had to work pretty hard for what we got. Wednesday was nearly a full bust but my partner got a 26″ walleye.

Total trip report no pike over 10 pounds, saw a few but couldn’t get them to hook up. Personally I had a cold hand and didn’t get a pike over 5, extremely unusual. Couple of tasty walleye and some nice big football bass thrown in for good measure.

Hot lure – none, not one lure stood out. Anything metal did worse than crank baits though. No pike on bucktails which is very unusual. Seemed shad raps, minnow raps, and tail dancers did marginally better than other lures.

We targeted mainly weed beds but also hit broken rock shorelines and a couple of rock piles too.

Once again another fun trip and can’t wait to go again

I agree with your report,we were out ,some good days then some real slow ones. The days we hit them, there were in 12 feet of water on the break. We were dragging 4 inch swimbaits just ticking them off the bottom.

Thanks for the report, love the lake and the memories made there.

Miss the days of Chris Granrud giving nearly daily fishing reports from Rainy.

Things change… not always for the better.

Thanks for posting. We were wondering if we were doing something wrong or just not adapting well.

Both of us are pike first fisherman who have a little pride that we’re supposed to know what we’re doing. We’ve been fishing Rainy as a team for 10 years now. In a weird way it’s good to hear we weren’t the only ones who struggled on some of the days.
