Going to Rainy this Thursday for 4 days. Staying at Coppen’s on the Canadian side. Would like to catch a couple walleyes and spend most of the time on smallies. Any words of wisdom? Fish on the beds? Any general spots to look for? I have no shame and will take tips you have. willing to drive all over. My fishing partner needs to be dragged off the water kicking and screaming so I’d like to keep us busy if possible. Thanks. Sam

Some of the key features we looked for while up on LOTW mid month was wind blown rubble shore lines.. the shale type rock just didn’t hold many fish..
Submerged points that go from single digit depths to the mid 20’s held fish on both sides…
Deeper fish were caught using lead core..
good luck and if you would like more details and gps locations go to the Facebook pages of Scatter Rap Challenge…there is a good amount of info in there !!

Can’t speak to that area but I’ve heard rumors through the grapevine. These are both from the north arm and the american side.
Rumors are that fishing is hot and the transitions to main lake haven’t happened yet. That may or may not change by the time you get there. Water temps haven’t reallly risen yet and were still around 60.
Good advice above to look for broken rock shorelines and keep it relatively shallow.
Stick baits, shad raps, moxies seem to be working. I don’t know about live bait good or bad.
have a great time!
June 24, 2013 at 11:52 pm #1179891I agree with pat K and am jealous as ever you get to go and I have to wait another 5 weeks before I get back up there. We pounded the walleye and smallies a couple weeks ago in shallow bays up the north arm that if it were not for the high water would have been only a couple feet deep and also the rocks worked well for us in 5 or 6 feet of water. seems water temps in the mid 60’s were the best then.Good luck!!
June 25, 2013 at 3:49 am #1179932Thanks for the tips guys. Good reason to be hated. I’ll give a report when I get back. My fishing partner from the Cities just got done pulling up his carpet and cutting off sheet rock. He is ready. Thanks again.

Tuesday the lake was glass and with the late spring, the smallies were on the beds and tight to shore. Three of us boated over 60 with many over 17″. Everything was working – top water, jigs, tubes and flukes all performed well, though the fluke seemed have an edge and would also get the stray walleye. The great fishing, breath-taking scenery and fantastic fishing made it one of the best days I’ve every had.
Some boats were trying the mid-lake reefs. I doubt they were having much success. The late spring has pushed the fish patterns back 2 to 3 weeks. We were catching walleyes in 6 to 7 feet where there was current.
Rainy with it’s location, size and accessibility discourages some people; however, those that fish it enjoy one of the best fisheries in Minnesota/Ontario.
July 5, 2013 at 5:10 am #1181725We had a fun trip as well. We had our best luck on a cloudy, rainy day– smallies and walleyes in the shallows. It was tougher on the hot, flat days. We could get small walleyes jigging at night in 18-25 fow. I usually fish docks and weed lines for bass in the central part of the state. Rainy and other Canadian shield lakes are challenging for me. Have never really drilled em like I occasionally do at home. Probably stuck with top water too long. Those strikes are tough to beat. Will definitely be back. It was nice to eat walleyes. The one fish per day walleye limit is kind of a head scratcher tho.
