Ice anglers own more equipment today than ever before. I’d estimate one of the biggest obstacles for fisherman is efficiently transporting that gear safely to fishing destination. The invention of the flip over shacks such as the Otter noted for it’s heavy duty sleds, allows fisherman to pack one heck of a lot of equipment out onto the ice. Beyond that many “Ice Heads” including myself have customized both Snowmobiles and Atv’s to transfer some sensitive gear on shocks. Otter has made many items for guys like us to protect gear. Auger Shields, Rod Cases and Monster boxes are all items that protect gear and also can be used to efficiently transport gear.

While Polaris industries produces a Widetrack sled for true utility use other sleds in their line, you can also customize the traditional touring sleds within the line up to get the job done.

Here is a pic of my main guide sled which happens to be a Polaris Edge. Not the weight of a Widetrack sled and frankly a beautiful riding sled through the portages and miles down the lake. I’ve customized a system to carry my Strikemaster auger, Marcum flashers, 2 Otter Rod cases, (2) 5 gallon pails with tip ups and misc gear, H20C mounted at dash, and tackle.

The benefits of having a system like this are more evident for the guys like myself that truly fish portable destinations often not lending access to trucks. Roads are left far behind areas you need that gear.

With a little thinking and engineering you can turn your touring sled like my Polaris Edge and make it into a customized Ice fishing rig without breaking the bank.

We’ll see you on the ice boys; We’ll be the team with wet sleeves.
