Crazy Ice fishing story

A few years ago I was fishing with a group of guys when one of the boys hooked up a big fish. In classic style I found myself face down on a sheet of ice peering into the life beneath us. What I was about to witness was puzzling to say the very least. I watch a giant pike burn past the hole while being hooked up on a…….CRANKBAIT!?!?

A bit puzzled I got back onto my knees and asked my customer the seemingly obvious question; What are you using?? If it is what I think it is I have no words…. He said Diamond jig with spikes. Hmnnnnnnn….Well I replied you have hooked a big pike and she has a Crankbait hanging out of her mouth. “SHE LOOKS ANGRY!!” This is going to make the upcoming holeside heroics a bit “Dicey”.

Needless to say the giant pike with a bit of a sore mouth was brought topside and soon after released with my customer gaining both a great memory and…….TACKLE!!

That fish was caught in the late March timeframe presumably 5 months after anyone would have been hucking crankbaits in the open water arena. She must have had one heck of a sore mouth.

Always wondered where all the lost Rapalas go and why we do not see more of this. Cool Story

Could it be possible she picked up the crankbait out of some rocks or wood?

I just had a customer shoot me an email who reminded me the Crankbait still had a couple feet of line attached to it. The diamond jig became in entangled with the line and Rapala and was brought in by the Rapala/line and never actually hooked. Crazy!!

I guess that Rapala is now currently hanging inside the hunting shack of those boys. Fun conversation piece.

Anything is possible, but I would presume she was hooked and snapped the line.

Those hooks are going to take awhile to rust away but from the looks of her condition she was doing just fine in the feeding department.

Super cool story and pics, Chris.

Neat story Chris. I have picked up my share of spare fishing tackle over the years but none that has a story like that to it.
