Too often anglers wake up to a chilly morning and declare FALL FISHING HAS ARRIVED!! Honestly we hastily disregard the LATE Summer pattern those big fish get caught up in prior to water temperatures dropping enough to initiate an honest fish movement. I believe there is a transitional period tough to fish much the same as a Shallow to deep run in June during couple week spell each September. Just like June this doesn’t mean you can’t catch good fish, but location of these fish is a bit more unpredictable leaving many accomplished anglers scratching their heads. With that being said, when those fish get that spark to abandon open basin feeding; The Big fish of Rainy Lake are quite vulnerable to anglers willing to lace up the boots and strap on their Snosuit!!

***Fat 25 in at the opening bell of a Blustery day on Rainy Lake!! Congrats!!

Moments later….The previous 25 inch Walleye was topped with an even heavier 25.5 inch fish simply smoking a 3/16 oz Orange/Chart tiger pattern H20 Precision jig!! Honestly I believe when you get into a pod of heavy fish during the fall on Rainy Lake there is a distinct possibility that these fish are open basin fish now on fishable structure. Remember Rainy Lake can fish VERY diverse; East to West and North to South this lake has much different structure. Still it is my belief when referencing US water that our biggest and baddest fish will often roam open basin water chasing high protein Cisco pods into deep haunts. This being said your best crack at the freak fish might be considered to occur during cool waters experienced in Spring, Fall and winter!!

    Another absolute Beauty!!

While trying to stay out of the “Wheelhouse” of a pod of big Walleyes we pinned down……..OOPS!!……….I guess a few big fish are over there also.

The Captain puts a distinct bend in a Loomis NRX jig stick most always noted to be a big Walleye!! The memorable deep thump of a Walleye shaking her head side to side gets a grown mans heart going like nothing else……..OK Gets it going anyway. This 26.5 inch Yellow bellied Walleye warmed the fingers of the guy dipping fingers into the bait container……Trust me!!

Fall fishing……..She isn’t always pretty!!! I’d suggest leaving Sally “I’m a bit Chilly Guys” home on this trip. This might mean rain/sleet/snow and wind, but also might mean elite caliber fish!! Plan for the worst weather and hope for the best. BTW this is Minnesota and planning your vacations around weather is nearly impossible.

Picture here “Sho-Time” is wondering why she isn’t retired at the SBC getting her batteries charged and enjoying a Glass massage by the caring crew.

I’ve been told to NOT depict reality at times when it comes to fall fishing; LOL!! OK….Bring your umbrellas for your drinks boys and lots of sun tan lotion………You may need to eat if for nourishment.

Oh you can say it……..Possibly my favorite smack talk on the water starts with these simple words; “Oh……..Is that ANOTHER one for ME!?!?!”

Atta girl….Keep the rod bent down and smile bent up!! Another TANKER hates BfishN tackles creation!!

Sometimes as October blows in small moves within traditonal Fall Walleye Structure can mean big Bronzebacks like this one. BTW She wasn’t there alone!!

A quick tip on Bronzeback hiding spots; We all know Smallies like Rocks, but in a lake filled with them you MIGHT want to find rocks holding food. Point being this; granite tables don’t hold the crayfish and pin minnows needed to feed bass. They also aren’t comprised of the filler mud between the boulder fields known to give up protien packed bug hatches. I like to find small scattered rock piles mixed with a combination of Sand and Mud with deep water access. These spots are fertile even into the fall cycle and attract Halloween treats for big fall Smallmouth bass that tend to trick most anglers.

Picture here; The Fall “Fireball in the sky” works hard to defrost the windshield of “Sho-Time”.

Oh, the “tempter and temptress” of crazy Rainy fishing strike again. WE are glad to see you have finally found someone to compliment those great ‘eyes. Am rutting through old boxes of Minnesota weather clothing in anticipation of cold weather /hot fishing with you in 9 days. Wool socks, cap, mittens, and union suit, check. Jonathan is adding an ice scraper, brush and shovel to the equipment list. Think we’re set.

“WINDOWS”…..Highly touted by yours truly. I believe everyday on the water gives anglers windows of activity in which the fish feed. Believe it or not fish do not feed 24/7. Of course we hope the window remains open all day long……..Still sometimes that simply isn’t reality. Keep your rods down while the window is open is critical to success. 80% of your fish will be boxed during these periods.

Abandoning the patented Daze “Cast and Drag” and going getting vertical starts triggering tight lipped fish……Possibly outside the window of activity!!

Man, great pics and reports Chris. Set the hook and cross those eyes. Deep water vertical fishing is one of my favorites.

Thanks Mike!! Yes that thump of a big Walleye gets the heart going!! Big fish have been pretty vulnerable as of late.
