Wondering if anyone was having trouble like I was over the past weekend with the ‘eyes. We could catch some smaller fish on some of the reefs between 25-40 feet but couldn’t find the bigger ones in shallower water.

We did some Pike fishing in the bays and points and caught 3 over 36″ with this one being the biggest @ 38.75″

I’m not sure if you are complaining or bragging? Nice pike.

Well, I’m kinda complaining because that’s not me that caught it. My brother caught it. Of course I grabbed it out of the water so I guess I can lay claim to 10% of the catch. We just had a hell of the time on the walleye, much more difficult than the other times I’ve been up there this year.

Fished the north arm and also caught a lot of eaters. The 2 biggest were a 24″ & 27″. The bigger ones were caught on deeper clay flats. Had about 6 fish each day that spit up smelt, seems like they are making a come back. About half came on spinners and the other half on jigs and plastics, except the 2 big ones came on a jig and 3″ of a crawler. Saw a lot of carcasses floating from some kind of a bug hatch, not sure what but there were quite a few floating around. Expect next weekend to be pitching plastics on the reefs and humps, normally my best weekend for big fish.

Fish are presently hlding in much more concise locations. The fall cycle can produce crazy big fish action, but also can be frustrating for visiting anglers not afforded due time to effictively eliminate dead water. Much of the Summer haunts have now been vacated by the big and girthy. It is kind of strange how some structure traditionally will hold fall fish while others similiar in nature just seem to be “Walleye Ghost towns”. Duplication of a producing patterns highly touted through the industry is a bit laughable right now in simple reality. Keep in mind there is a fall transition much like observed during the spring that will have anglers shrugging shoulders, but when it’s on…..It’s on!! BTW…….From here on out weather permitting it’s big fish time!!

Agree on that Chris. The bite is on! Caught fish pretty much every spot we dropped a line last week. Nice mix of eaters and big fish. Jigs/shiners and single hook spinners with shiners took a majority of fish.

Hey beanman – beautiful pike and I’m jealous! Any secret to the pattern? We were up a few days before you and had the opposite experience.

We targeted pike mainly but did pick up some walleyes when doing a change of pace. We’ve got a couple pics of nice walleye but none of pike. Too bad we couldn’t have traded fish:)

I would post my pics but it was my partner’s cameray. He can’t seem to find a way to send them to me yet.

I can tell you that we didn’t have much luck with Northern other than the entrance to a single bay that more than likely had some current near its entrance. We caught 2 over 36 there and had 4 follows after those 2 were caught of fish that were just as big and one was probably over 40. Of course when I saw it I got a little too excited and hollered too loud. 7-8′ of water and there was some dying cabbage submerged throughout.
