“Dog Daze”

While many anglers find themselves anxiously awaiting the cool blow from the north, often times lakes are in the latter stages of an old bite. Fish seem to become a bit smarter or simply stuffed full of food as they’ve located the most readily available “Chow supply” and are devouring it. Hungry fish not finding food are easy targets. Full fish within a huge supply of food……Not so much.

Anglers truly need to be “Spot On” in both technique and location in the late stages of summer patterns. I just spent 2 days guiding with my good buddy with a larger group. We truly put a lot of nice fish in the boats that included limits of beautiful eaters and slots, but producing spots were not widespread. The second day we ran into a group that had 1 Walleye mid-day. I said “Yep…..She’s a bit tough right now”. He replied “How did you boys do?” Almost not wanting to answer it I said…….Well ” Between our two boats I believe we have 28 eaters here as we’re pulling in for shorelunch”.

I do believe he is thinking “Tough” obiously has a few different meanings when it references a box of fish. Still….. numbers can be deceiving; Though we were catching respectable numbers and size…….We both only had a couple spots producing.

These are truly the “Dog daze” of summer, but expect that bite to juice up shortly boys!!

Fishing has definitely been tough for me for the past two weeks. Last summer I never experienced the “dog days” effect, but I think I am now. I don’t think low water levels are helping anything either..

Chris – Any chance I can order up some of that fall feasting? We’ll be in your backyard for a week starting this weekend. Hopefully the pattern changes a bit so we can have a “bad” day like you had:)

Honestly we need temps to start falling. Looks like we’ve got some cool nights on order!! I’m going to be out over the next few days trying to pin down some big slabs. When they start to concentrate together the big Walleyes most always are ready to roll as well.

Looks like nice fall weather coming up. I could think about complaining. However after being soaked and freezing last year (see jon’s video post a few days back)at least it looks nice for people. My last couple of fall trips have had some pretty significant cold fronts so it will be nice not to freeze

Maybe the toothy critters will wake up in the next week too. We’re going to give it a go and we’ll report back after the trip.

Often times anglers are too quick in thinking of “Fall Fishing” patterns. A single cold front won’t move fish. A stretch of cold weather drastically dropping water temps move the cisco and lake shiners. THIS moves fish. This is what an angler must key in on to be on elite caliber fish. Walleyes, Crappies and Pike……….All not as smart as we make them out to be. Move the buffet and you’ll move the big girls.
