Walleyeben clobbers Rainy Lake Walleyes with Daze

As always I truly enjoy my trips with Ben. We get after the fish and simply enjoy the time in the boat together. We focused energies on transitional rockpiles as Walleyes seem to be considering a move to breaklines. In all honesty we bucked the trend of what most anglers here in borderland have experienced as of late. Fishing conditions were difficult with bright sun and no wind. Still being extremely focused on the precise pattern and presentation landed a boat loat of the “GOOD ONES”.

2 days on the water between Ben and I around 6 hours of fishing each day landed us 60 Walleyes. 40 of these fish were beautiful slots and 20 nearly perfect 16-16.75 eaters.

MAX RAP…..As if you needed to ask.

Ben hucked the Purple Ghost and I hurled the Flake Green.

Ben sometimes fishing is more than fishing and these last two days for both of us were much more than fishing, but “Putting the Boots” to the Rainy lake Walleyes felt pretty darn good bud!!

I wasn’t guiding on the houseboat trip though did the pre-launch seminar. I am seeing a few posts here in the Rainy Lake forum. I would guess more will filter in.

James did you post the info from the houseboat trip yet? I am up at Rainy right now looking for some info on the hot bite. This is my first trip this time of year.

    Thanks

The Houseboat trip reports have been scattered. I can tell you the fish are transitional right now and being caught in big numbers and size in 3-15 feet of water. Rolling spinner blades, Casting stickbaits, jigs and minnows and even slip bobber rigs are working well. Wind and current are critical components this time of year. Big pike are starting to show back up in the mid-range water. Yesterday my customer had an encounter with a 40+ who latched on to a 14 inch Walleye. We weren’t able to net them both, but provided a heck of a thrill for everyone.

We’re still landing 15-20 Walleyes over 20 inches with a nice bag of eaters mixed in. Big Pike and Smallies are had in very close proximity.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Thanks for the reply Chris. We’ve found some fish but not the numbers we are use to from Rainy. I don’t think the weather has helped much this week.

My partner and I just had 8 days (6/2-6/9) up your way and we target Pike most of the time. Last year we were up a little later in June but seemed to be a very similar time from water temp, lack of weed growth, and water temps. Both trips we caught way more small pike that we’re used to. Last week we had good numbers but not the normal catch of 4-8 pounders. We did boat six over ten pounds. We had the same near miss of a monster hammer a 19″ walleye but got a double and the second fish spooked the monster. Only a fish story .

Chris – do you know where the big pike go following the post-spawn transition and this transition you refer to above? Most of the bigger fish were related to the areas that had developed weed growth but a mystery on many, many parts of the lake we tried for back to back June trips.

Pat I have asked Chris the same question before and what it comes down to is dispertion to deeper waters. I go to Rainy to fish pike also, Eyes just get in the way!

It is my philosophy that Pike enter into that in-between area or even deeper haunts. Les than 5% of anglers will fish “In-Between” water. What I reference is not the shallows and not the breaks when fishing early summer. Those Pike are likely free roaming these areas and also deep water scooping up unexpecting pout. This makes targeting these fish in earnest much less efficient. This season undoubtedly has been fishing different because of early low water and crazy temperature swings. There is much more water temp stability a bit deeper. Still Big pike are to be had and Rainy lake kicks out the tanks year in and year out. The last 2 days we’ve landed a couple more 38-39 inch fish providing two young kids a thrill of a lifetime.

thanks guys, that makes sense. We had a few hours working on the same theory but minds wander when not finding big fish.

We couldn’t find them on the rocks either and generally don’t fish deeper that 15fow if we can help it. That and the umbrella drink weather probably didn’t help much.

Here’s my partner with the best of the trip, 13lbs and one of mine. Both of these came out of developed weed beds.

Both great fish and nice pictures. Thanks for sharing bud!!! Looks like you boys had a blast, and I vividly remember the first days of your trip. The weather was brutal with no wind either. We really had to work for our fish over that weekend prior to the weather breaking a bit. You were probably working things correct and even in the right areas. Sometimes Weather simply trumps a good hand. Weather seldom gets enough emphasis, but I’d say is the most influential factor in determining the mood of fish. You simply deal with what is given to you on that particular day and make sure your having fun doing what you love.

Spot on with the weather comments Chris. We had more margarita weather than anything else. A few of the days we could see clouds to the southeast and wondering if you guys on the American side got a little break. One day we had broken clouds for 360 degrees around us until sunset when everything cleared off.

We made the best of if and had a fantastic time. Oddly enough we were still able to pick up walleyes from time to time. Especially since we spent the majority of time targeting pike. Can’t wait to get back up there but it probably won’t be until September.
