Many anglers feel the most difficult scenario they face while chasing Walleyes, happens early in the season when a bright sunny void of wind settles in. There is no wind to concentrate fish or break up the surface. Bright sun drives those shallow water fish to the bottom.
Walleyes are known to be quite sensitive to sunlight. The above mentioned conditions haunt many walleye fisherman early in the season. Frankly…….This RARELY will be a great fishing day. Still this doesn’t mean you can’t coax some of your lakes bigger fish into an easy meal.
Yesterday we were faced with that dreaded bluebird day. No wind and bright sun made sunscreen more important than the net. Those bigger fish that are inhabiting the shallow water were literally hugging the bottom with sunglasses on. We find that you often need to drop that presentation in their mouth from a distance.
One of my favorite presntations for these conditions is a 1/8 oz. H20 Precision jig tipped with a fathead. Anglers can opt to cast and drag, drag behind the boat, or even fish a small jig under a cork. Even some of the most sensitive “Sunlight Eyes” are vulnerable to this presentation.
Here’s our two biggest fish from Yesterday’s “Umbrella Drink” walleye fishing. The first was a healthy 26 inch Walleye I landed on a Pink 1/8 oz. H20 Precision jig from Custom Jigs and Spins. The second was my customers Post Spawn CPR’D 28.5!! The fishing wasn’t lights out, but much better than playing cards and hoping for ideal weather conditions or low light periods.
The next time your facing weather early in the season that is seemingly more suited for the backyard “Slip-N-Slide” consider feathering a small H20 Precision jig into the “wheelhouse” of those big fish.
Just like our house…..If that food is in the kitchen long enough it will be eaten.
