Productive half day trip/ Brutal winds

Yesterday morning I met Greg and Jeff at Sha-Sha resort for what was planned to be a Crappie trip. 30mph winds gusting up to 40mph made a Slab expedition impossible.

I asked Greg if he’d like to chase Walleyes instead, and he was all in!!

Walleyes were stacked up on a transitional breakline in 5-7 feet of water. We put roughly 30 Walleyes in the boat between 8:30-12:00. It was a half day trip full of action. Also landed a big pike and NEARLY landed another. Seems the “Big Kahuna” net I have on the side of the boat is nearly used daily.

The boys were wonderful to fish with. I lined them both up with a NRX Loomis rod to work “Max Raps”. Both of these rods were paired up with Stradic C14’s. The elite caliber graphite blanks frankly enabled us to detect strikes in the “CLICK YOUR HEELS TOGETHER” ruby slipper winds. 27 of the 30 Walleyes were slot fish and most of the fish were over 20 inches. We did manage 3 eater sized fish and a nice 5lb pike for the pan.

Yesterday reminded me once again why I continue to love guiding. 3 guys having a blast beating the big Rainy lake Walleyes. I believe the two boys learned a valuable lesson of how to work a stickbait. This is something that seemingly cannot be taught in text. Over and over this is a presentation that needs to be taught one on one. The guys picked it up and did very well!!

The NRX Loomis is simply a gamechanging rod. Spendy…YEP.. Gamechanging….YEP.

I put it in customers hands more and more because CUSTOMERS catching fish is where it is at for me. This stick simply will help you catch more fish.

Don’t be afraid to ask me to lace up that NRX on your next trip. BTW the trip…Might get more spendy. It is nearly impossible to use a stick like this and then go back to a lesser quality graphite rod. Honestly my other rods feel like Boat oars after the NRX. Almost like if your flasher batteries die during a ice fishing day. For me I’d frankly rather just go home.

Wonderful day with fun guys simply enjoying a heck of a lot of Rainy Lake Walleyes!!

Greg with another beautiful “Golden” 23 incher caught on a Flake Greeen Max Rap.

We’ll see you boys Friday night at Sha-Sha resort!! I’ll have 4 other customers with me. I’m sure we can share strategy.

Our big pike numbers continue to rise. This heavy pike only measured around 36 inches, but was built like a 40!!

Again Max Rap in Flake Green. I know…I’m kind of boring that way.

Jeff laces up another Beauty!! If I recall correctly he bucked the trend and caught this on a Flake Silver Max Rap.

    I KNOW….That’s nearly CRAZY TALK!!

Customers are often amazed at the brilliant colors on Rainy Lake Walleyes. IMHO the best looking Walleyes in the world! Sure…Might be a tad biased.

    Nice fish Greg!!

IMHO Best Walleye sticks in production today. Loomis NRX!! When you fish with us expect the best as we continue to demand it from ourselves.

If there is something I deem will give our customer the edge….We’ll own it!! You will use it!!

    LOL!! Yeah go figure…..Rapala….Big fish??

The boys did very very well!! At one point I just had the boat on I-Pilot and tried keeping up between netting fish and removing hooks!! Precisely what you hope for!! Mostly slot fish, but did manage a few eaters mixed in.

Back home now in the Chicago work-a-day world.

What can I say!!!??? “The seas were angry that day my friends”….George Castanza

Chris, thankfully, was able to shift gears and make our half day guide trip a resounding success!

Here are some of my take-aways…

    Guides:

In particular, Chris Granrud, WILL make the difference between a so-so fishing excursion and one for the books. We would have NEVER had the success that we did that day if it was not for Chris! In hindsight, we should have scheduled Chris for earlier in our trip. When we booked Chris, he only had one half day spot open and was only on the first half of a 45+ day consecutive day guide string

    Equipment:

Chris’s NRX rods married up with Shimano Stradic CI4 reels strung with braided line and MaxRaps tied directly to the line made all the difference in the world!

    Presentation and Technique:

Even with top of the line equipment, without the proper presentation and technique, again, we would have only chipped away at these fish. Chris patiently showed us the techniques to get the bait in strike zone and how to present it in a fashion to trigger strikes….A LOT OF STRIKES! One has to see the technique in action and go through the teething and learning curve to get it dialed in correctly. Chris took his time and coached us through numerous casts and retrieves to ensure we weren’t missing strikes or at least wouldn’t miss a strike…we only missed a couple after getting dialed in. THANKS SENSEI!!!!!

    Proof:

When we started fishing, Chris jumped out in front 8-0 before arming us with the proper equipment and showing us the proper presentation technique. We quickly closed the gap after that.

Chris/Others, How often (or not) do you use leaders? What material? Do’s and do-nots with leaders? When / When not?

    Hi Tyler,

I fish Walleyes in Pike infested waters. These pike are often found in the LARGE variety. I opt to employ Fluoro Leaders in which I personally hand crimp construct and hand crimp. I’m currently using 50lb test line in which I’ve stepped up considerably from before without seeing any noticeable changes in either bait action or strikes.

Something that may be of interest to you is the fact that I like to hand crimp a sleeve directly to the “O Ring” of a suspending bait like the “Max Rap” to alleviate any extra terminal tackle. This gives it even a cleaner look and doesn’t alter the finely tuned nuetral bouyancy of the bait which makes it so lethal.
