In-Depth Outdoors introduces “Hooked Up” its new short video series for open water. This first episode is “web extra” footage filmed May 5, 2012 on Rainy Lake. James Holst and Chris Granrud, owner of Rainy Daze Guide Service, explore shallow bays on Rainy Lake in search of BIG early season pike on light tackle.

Looks like a blast! And yes, I was going to ask about the net until you said something.

Fishing like that is definitely one of the more exciting ways to chase pike early in the season. Light tackle… shallow water… LOTS of action. For the guys attending the Rainy Lake HB trip end of May you should expect this bite to still be going strong.

We call it twitchin’ here. Our bait of choice is the Rattling Rogue, the rattle chamber gives it another dimension. Yes, it is deadly on early season pike, and we too have caught walleyes & bass with that method. We also use the floaters to locate big crappies in the spring. You find one, you find a bunch!! Thanks for a very informative show, as usual. Your shows are our “Wish Videos”!!

I think that is “SPOT ON”. Truly the method of retrieval might be considered more of a twitch and pause. It probably seems simple in concept, but there is something about it that an angler just needs to get the hang of. It is very hard to just try to explain it to someone. I find myself reeling and twitching at the same time. When fishing a original size 13 Balsa after a hard “Twitch” my hesitation still has me sweeping my rod forward ever so slightly. You DON’T want the floater to rise to the surface.

There are little things that frankly WILL make the difference between you simply exercising your shoulder or catching fish. See it DAILY.

I promise you this is AS deadly on Walleyes and Smallmouth. Now CRAPPIES you mention. Hmnnnnnnnnn…..I’ve got some interesting information here, but I’m going to wait for a separate thread. I’m sure you know where I’m going with this.

    Great Video.

If you guys want to really step up “the rigging” for these baits try the new Power Pro Hollow Ace with the DaHo Splicing needles. Splice a very thin wire leader into the Hollow Ace line.

Smooth finish – no swivel – no knot. Action of bait remains “perfect” for that suspended pause that puts fish in the boat and big gators and muskies can’t bite you off.

It is impressive. I have used this stuff for two years now – mostly saltwater but used it last Spring. All I can say is “wow”.

    It is the next level.

Jack: Did you see that part of the clip around 3:40?

Yup, big smallies too. We had 2 or 3 tank smallies right around that 20″ mark within 20 minutes of each other mixed in with the pike and walleyes. Once we found the right bay it seemed like every predator species was up shallow and eating stickbaits. Fun-Fun!

Sounds very interesting. I’ve never heard of it… but that’s not terribly surprising if it is a product brought to the forefront by the saltwater guys. I can promise you… I’m one google search away from learning a whole lot more about it. Sounds very interesting.
