Ice Out Pike on Rainy Lake

Chris and I have been sharing emails back and forth here over the last couple days putting together dates to do some “between seasons” pike fishing on Rainy. For those that don’t know, the pike season never closes on Rainy so this presents a unique opportunity to get in on some great fishing while the rest of the state of MN is closed.

Which brings me back to the reason I’m posting. Here’s the show from the very first time Chris and I ever fished together… WAY back in 2009!

The fishing hasn’t changed but Chris and I are definitely sporting more grey hair these days.

How’s the water levels looking? We going to have enough water to get back deep into the bays?

So what you’re saying is you think he’s holding out on us?

From what he’s been telling me there’s not much of a bite, yet. Water temps are low and the weather has been cold. I’d be willing to bet the next run of warm and sunny weather we see will break those big pike loose.

Water is down, but not terrible. Low water equals less places to hide. I’ve ran the back channel full throttle with the lowest water reading at 3.2 feet. Channel cans (RED/GREEN) are back in the main channel again ahead of May’s opener. Water temps are a bit cool yet and could use some bright sunshine. High 30’s main basin and low to mid 40’s in back bays. I’ve only been fishing pike one day and we did alright. NOT spectacular. We’ve been waiting for a slight warm up. I’ll be out and about the first part of next week. I fully expect to dial them in on that outing.
