Glidin’ Rap????

Hey guys!! I’m looking for some input from any of you who have “Hucked” the Glidin’ Rap? I love to work the original Balsa stickbaits Size 13’s, and X-rap Slash baits. Recently my interest has peeked while reading about these Glidin’ Raps. I’m putting my annual spring order of raps in this week.

My initial thinking is a longer cast might be achieved along with the possibly of an even more realistic look at a standstill or slow fall? Might this possibly be viewed as a cross between the stickbait and slash? Thoughts/Experiences wanted. Thanks in advance!!

Chris for a sweet glide bait you should look at the phantom lineup of baits. The 4.5″ soft tail might be just what your looking for.

I have used them for a couple weeks last season and did really well. You work them completely different than the X-raps where you are more aggressive. The gliding rap takes just short pulls and the bait does a real nice walk-the-dog action on semi slack line. Depending on your leader will determine how fast it will fall if you want to get to a specific depth. You can cast them a mile and don’t have to worry about them getting caught in the wind.

I think your theory on how it suspends is valid. I had some of the same thoughts last year at this time so I picked one up. Not much success but that may not be the lure’s fault.

I got it for a finesse presentation when more active pike lures weren’t working. I used it in mid-June and a late September trip on spots that had been very good producers over the past few years. The spots were generally bays with 6-15 fow and varying weed growth depending on which trip. Using a glide retrieve as posted on Rapala’s site I was unable to trigger any fish.

Was this because the fish were just that negative on those days? Was this because the fish had moved(kind of doubt this one)? Was this because it wasn’t a confidence bait and I didn’t give it much of a chance?

I know I waited to try it until fish were very negative and I did not give it much of a fair shake. Might work better a little earlier in the season. That said I’m still going to try it more this year when the bucktails and stickbaits aren’t doing well. Be up in your area in late may or early June for a week.

LOL!! Yeah that is how I read the pricing Drew!! LOL!! I guess if your not losing a pile of them it isn’t too bad. I would guess you probably won’t lose many fishing shallow as they are designed……Bit different than cranking. Sounds like a tough day Drew! OUCH on the pocket book bud.

Precisely what I wanted to hear Ryan. I want long casts accurately in wind. I want a walk the dog type action with a slight fall versus rise in some cases. Thanks for your input and I’ve got a few in the online “Shopping Cart” to try out!! I think I’ll be using them with my Fluoro Leaders.

I have one and have found out the northerns really like them.. They are more of a erratic glide bait than a true side to side style. I like the phantoms and hell hounds personally.. I know they are built for musky’s but never have caught one on that.. but it would work when the water warms up a little more seeing its more of a erratic side to side jerk bait.. Hope that makes some sense and helps a little.

I’m going to give them a good college try while I have my buddy throw our traditional stuff. Only way to know for sure is fish it along with other proven producers.

Sounds like you and I shouldn’t shop together!! LOL!! Too much in common when it comes to new tackle!! BTW I’m thinking the same thing!! I also like to give fish a different look every once in awhile. On an initial glance as was mentioned above you will probably have to fish this with a very slight slack line. This IMHO means you will need to fish Braid and be ready for “Click” hits at a distance and be on a hair trigger. Frankly similiar to how I fish a stickbait. Great……Now I won’t be able to sleep tonight!!

I have used them for muskys and caught a couple with them.
They work the best using a 6ft rod just like most glide baits

Can’t work the gliding rap with too heavy of line or leaders. Must have lite gear and like said before it’s more erratic and less predictable where it’s going to go.

I second the phantoms……I only got 5pike on my perch soft tail this morning b4 work

on the phantoms. i like the new baby squirkos from monster lures better put alot of pike in the boat chasing muskie with them. walleye and perch pattern work best for me.

Chris, I bought my first car for $50, a fact that has influenced my view of economics ever since. No way in the world I spend $18 on a Rapala. What’s it made out of, Teak ?

I’ve caught quite a few slimers off this bait last year. As I’m sure you know, you really need to keep the line slack with these larger jerkbaits to get the best side to side action. A slack line with a wide sweep of the rod and a pause 10 yds from the boat will often get the “followers” to commit. Anyways..you’re the pro…I think they’re worth the money…my .02

Thanks Justin. I’ll admit they are in my “ONLINE SHOPPING CART” curiousity if anything. I will admit they aren’t the only thing I’ll be tossing “Sheckles” at.

Chris, I have fished Glidin Raps a lot in Canada for pike the last 2 years on the English River system. The water we fish is stained and early in the year some of the shallow bays don’t have great visibility if the wind kicks up so we used the chrome colored Glidin Raps the most and have a lot of luck. I think between my dad and I we have 3 pike over 40″ on Glidin Raps the last 2 years. Just like any glider, the pause is the key with these things. They have a slow “roll” to them on the pause as they very slowly sink and that is when we get 90% of our strikes. Phantoms and the x-rap subwalk are also great smaller gliders too.

Thanks Man!! Great information. I’m always looking for the next advantage or the next “Trigger” for that elite caliber fish. Thanks for sharing.

To me it is a presentation I haven’t utilized, and again a sort of “Tweener” between the stickbait and X-Rap presentations I work. I’m intrigued. One thing I believe is big fish eat dying “Baitfish”. A slow sink in a hard body seems to represent that like nothing else. This is precisely why I want to play around with it.

As for the plastic tails on some baits…..I just have them DESTROYED by pike. That personally has me a bit concerned.

I like these more than the Glidin Rap. Seems like they have a better action.

Chris, I tried a couple last fall and piked up a few pike. I like the color options that Rapala offers in them. But Here’s a bait that I have been doing much better on.

    Koppers Herring swim bait

Click on the spec tab and you’ll see the sizes available. 2 reasons why I like the Koppers bait so much more. 1. Offered in 2 different sink rates 1/2 foot and 1 foot per second. The tri-body configuration makes for incredible action when worked really slow
