What does a Rainy Lake guide do on a day off between walleye trips? Scout out a crappie bite for incoming clients, of course!!

Filmed Feb 1, 2012: Chris Granrud, owner of http://www.rainydazeoutdoors.com, takes a day off from walleye guiding to scout for mid-winter crappie on Rainy Lake and drops on a school of active biters making for some VERY fast and exciting action!

Ive often had trouble with fishing deep panfish and having line twist. I use the smallest barrel swivel made but I would still rather not use it at all. Just looking for an idea how to fish those deep crappies with the lighter tackle and have no twist. Thanks

    Hi Kruger.

Line Twist or “Bait Spin” versus line memory need to be seperated in concept so we are all on the same page here. In recent years there has been a LOT of discussion of line twisting that can lead to a rotating presentation down low in the wheelhouse of those big Crappies. It is something that anglers might want to consider when targeting deep water panfish. The deeper the water the more twist/spin your presentation can have, and for longer periods of time simply due to the more line worked with.

This year I’ve started using “Nanofil” from Berkley. It is the smallest diameter line I’ve been able to find that still has the hook set strength for large panfish and even the accidental Walleye/Pike/Whitefish. The Micro thin “Horse hair” as I’ve been known to reference it has ZERO memory in my experience and minimizes line twist as much as possible while using a spinning reel. For me a fly reel simply isn’t realistic in deep water fishing, and I’m not willing to pony up $500.00 for a higher line pick up ratio. I’ve struggled with whether to use small barrel swivels as well, but haven’t seen one that truly eliminates the “Spin” effect your referencing. Still so far for me I’ve been extremely satisfied with the 4lb .008 diameter Nanofil from Berkley this season in early deepwater testing, and the fish don’t seem to be spooked in anyway.

    Might be worth a shot.

Great advice Chris, I will have to try some of this new line also. Hopefully you’ll have those crappies, or even some big fish lined up for me and Kelly on the 21st. Can’t wait to get up there for a second winter trip!!!!!!!
