If there is one thing that has always intrigued me about Ice fishing it would be the seasonal transitioning of the bigger fish. Seems early in the season we’ll put the heat to many larger fish that search a middle ground anywhere from 6-20 f.o.w.
Those fish seem to transition to certain first line breaks and then some fertile mid lake structure……..BUT THEN WHAT?? Time to pack up camp?? NOPE.
Anglers struggle like crazy when fish aren’t located on that breakline, turn or mid lake sunken reef. Well here is a little hint……Learn to define mud flats and gravel bars that attract those perch. When you find the transitional areas from sunken reefs to deep flats you may very well have found the toughest fish transition of the winter. Now take it one step farther and find unmarke structure such as a few big boulders in a flat and you’ve got something!!
Keep in mind mid-winter Walleyes may very well NOT be overly aggressive. As the winter progresses the fish will grow a bit more lethargic typically, but by no means does this mean you can’t catch good fish.
Congratulations to customers Eric, Shawn and Roger on the good fishing. Nice meal of eater Walleyes mixed in with a few big slots. Many pike including Eric Goodmans PB Toothy critter pictured here!! Big whitefish, pout, nice batch of 11 inch perch and a few smaller saugers.
We found a lightning spoon from Custom Jigs and Spins in the perch pattern tipped with a minnow head, or a simple hook, fathead, split shot and float turned the most fish.
I lost a 26 inch plus walleye at the hole who showed her grill to Roger and I about 3 times before spitting the hooks.
Great time boys and look forward to our next years adventure.
BTW I had to PRY my Marcum LX7 out of these boys hands. I apparently need……….2!!
