Big Fish Snapping/Cisco Boiling

Having the day off from guiding yesterday on the account of a customers freak accident I spent the majority of the day buttoning up things that normally simply don’t get done before fall. It has been at least 3 years since I’ve had Prime time days off from Mid-September-Mid October. I must admit I was a bit glum not fishing this time of year on such a nice day. Still I was able to place snow fence around many of our white pines that our deer think often mistake for “Green popsicles” come winter time, and of course haul firewood closer to “Camp Daze”.

Still as late afternoon rolled around the now 75 degree fall day had my mind wandering like a child wondering how the fish were reacting to the warmer temps. With “Sho time” looking left out I found myself giving into temptation deciding a mere couple hours on the water to watch the sun go down wouldn’t hurt anything. I’m sure those home projects around the house would be waiting for me upon my return. I had decided there would be little moving around that evening. I’m not a paying customer and if it isn’t going…….So be it. If the fish weren’t where they are supposed to be I was going “OLD SCHOOL” on them while waiting for them to MOVE IN. If the fish never showed up I’d kick back and watch the sunset on the most beautiful evening of the year. As I eased into the fishing hole the screen lit up with DEEP RED ARCS. I kind of shook my head knowing I was “Alone” and this was the type of warm day after a water cool down that coould quite possibly have the big girls snapping. Sure enough after setting the I-Pilot I found myself quite busy driving home hooks. I’d estimate 10 walleyes over 20 inches with the big girl of the night taping 27.5 inches in short of 2 hours of fishing. Who knows how many fish could have been caught if I hadn’t been trying to take photo’s. I knew things were going to be good when I had an evening “cisco boil” taking place around the boat. The cisco have evidently started their migration for the fall spawn. It was truly surreal watching the sun drop through the pines with the only noise around the boat the boil of a cisco, and the occassional distant cry of an old 2 stroke motor.

Trying to take pics of the fish was quite impossible, and frankly I decided tonight it wasn’t even about pics of the catch. It was the best weather of the year. It was the most aggressive bite of the Fall so far. It was the real chance of a 30 inch walleye that ended up falling short by 2.5 inches. 101 trips into the open waters season and I simply could not keep myself off the water 1 WHOLE day. “Hello my name is Chris Granrud……..I’m the owner/operator of Rainydaze Guide Service…..And I am a fishing addict!!” The “Fishing Queen” has always told me the first step is to admit it.

It appears as though we’ve started to turnover. Peering at the walleyes coming up the lake definately had an ugly cloud of…….GUNK in the top of the water column.

Take a peek at the Cisco the 27.5 coughed up in the boat.

I wonder what my wife is going to say when I tell her that we are moving NORTH this afternoon. Fantastic story, sounds like heaven.

    Chris:

Great read, what were water temps as your ciscoes were starting to make their move toward the shoreline. I didn’t have them boiling two nights ago, but they were certainly on the screen… The 3500 acre lake was sitting at 59* for water temps… It will be interesting to see what happens to the mixing of the lake when this next system comes through.

    Hi Mark,

Thanks!! Our surface temps were 62 degrees?? Go figure. Still there was an obvious cloud of bottom turnover on the top. I’m sure not a complete turnover, but not sure how else to explain what I saw.

Mike as you know the “Fishing alone” is nearly as enjoyable as catching big fish…………NEARLY!!
