Before it was “Cool”

Before it was “Cool” grandpa used to pick “Dew Worms” that we’d place in a old coffee can for the next mornings fishing adventure on the banks of Muddy Creek. BTW we’d often fish for “Black Bass”. Took me until my late teens to realize what the heck a “Black Bass” was!!

Before it was “Cool” grandpa constructed a small wooden sled with a hinged seat that held a coffee cannister. Inside this coffee can held burning charcoal to warm the seat and hands for mom as he pulled her out ice fishing on the now infamous Lake Erie.

Before it was “Cool” grandpa had a crude ice fishing shelter, and would often correct my silly modern day terminology from “Portable fish house” to to a “Fishing Hut” which consisted of 1 simple wooden center pole and a wrap around piece of cut canvas. Yes Sir…….That was a “Fishing Hut”

Now I suppose he’d likely frown at the advancements within the fishing industry if he we’re here fishing with me today. “Making anglers SOFT” he probably grumble over his morning coffee and raisin pie!! Well this years Otter Portable Houses not only double as a well known indestructable towable sled, but are now insulated to keep all of us “Soft” anglers warm and comfortable. My new Marcum flasher will allow me to view the same fish in multiple screens and comes with an oversized screen that is going to be a DREAM helping me fine tune my jigging presentation with ease of viewing. Lastly, rest his soul……I’ve been BUYING my guide service “Nightcrawlers” at the Rainy Lake One Stop shop all summer long!!

Well……….Before it was “Cool” fishing was a way of life for many of our personal teachers who introduced us to this wonderful sport. 40 hour work weeks were a bit more common. Today average Americans work longer hours weeks and in turn have less free time which has condensed outdoor activities. We’ve documented the “Cool Factor” in fishing is still a timeless tradition we all enjoy. Hats off the the leaders within our fishing industry that continue to yield advancements that expand the age old tradition of hook and line angling to be more comfortable, and much more efficient for all of us.

Feel free to add your own………”Before it was Cool” story

Brings back memories of packing the ice chisel(you know, that cold steel bar that weighed at least a hundred lbs)on the tobaggon with the chopped down broom-handle “winter rods” for a glorious day fishing on Black Bay. After chopping through 30 inches of ice, how could you even think of complaining you were cold! I remember how excited we were when we got that first hand auger, but had to add another layer of wool to keep the cold out. Gotta luv MN ice Fishing!

That reminds me of a story where my buddy was fishing with his dad on Rainy. His dad had him out looking for some sunken structure with the “SPUD BAR”. Apparently he didn’t think twice about having to go through 4-5 inches of ice as he searched!! He said he worked up a pretty good lather. Then when he finally quit his dad forgot the heater for his shack and he nearly froze to death. GOOD OLE DAYS!!
