I can always remember my grandpa referencing natures visual signs of spring that would often tip anglers off when the walleyes would start snapping; There is certainly a direct relationship between water temperatures and air temperatures that not only effect plant life, but also the big fish of the north. My grandpa fished the great Lake Erie back before it was “COOL” as he along with my grandma raised 3 girls in a close by rural town. I’m sure many of us have heard the old analogy “When oak leaves reach the size of a squirrels ear”. Yes sir!! I’ve watched that theory proven year after year being “Spot on” during the spring.
So………What about Fall? There are a few things in “Natures Arena” once again that can seemingly tip off anglers as to the start of a BIG FISH BITE here in Northern Minnesota!! The ground cover is often the first to show signs of the shortened day that seems to condense the bite. Sumac and birch will begin to turn over into a brilliant gold coloration as other underbrush browns as it dies off. Moose are in the midst of their rut, and can be found covering ground and water in search for a cow in heat. Lastly, each morning at the “Daze” camp seems is started with a fire in the fireplace before heading out on the lake.
Let fall settle in. The first cold snap can find fish in a re-adjustment stage. After those first couple cold snaps when the water temps have taken the initial plunge and temperatures seem to moderate it is GO TIME!! Drop the Puck, Tee it up, Lay one in here, Kick it to me………..GO TIME!!
So to simplify the thought process as I’m not sure the “Fishing Queen” will want guys peering in our windows each morning to see if the fire is going ; “When the backdrop of your fishing venture begins to turn a golden yellow, and wildlife becomes comes out to soak in the morning sunshine……GET YOUR LINE IN THE WATER TEAM!!” The animals, fish and trees can feel it…..Can you?? Throw a log in the fire and hit the lake!!
LIVE IT!! Yes…….IT IS GO TIME!!
