Regardless how many hours/days we spend on the water fishing; I always have a tough to leaving active fish!! There is little doubt I’m still a fishing addict at heart and already excited about tomorrows run!! Yesterday’s half day trip found me in the company of Randy and DeAnn. Our fishing went from very good to EXCELLENT!! As our half-day trip was nearing the closing bell we simply starting drilling the walleyes on nearly every cast. I assure you……WE STAYED and handed out the SMACKDOWN!!!
What a great time fishing with this husband and wife team!! For years they’ve traveled long distances into the wonders of Canada. This year they decided to pull back while planning a little fishing trip to Rainy lake in the Good ole USA!! We pulled between 45 and 50 walleyes on our 1/2 day trip. Rather easy limit of 15-16.5 inch eaters and lots of slot fish.
Deep gravel bars with a mixture of scattered boulders seem to have some sort of micro sized minnow that these walleyes are feeding on. I’ve found this very small minnow (3/4 of an inch) in a large percentage of these fish. Frankly I’m not sure what this minnow even is. Regardless the walleyes are feeding on them and they seemingly have attracted large concentrations of fish. Small fatheads have matched this pattern very well laced on 3/16 oz. Rounding off our trip as the Mighty Rainy Lake started to puff her chest we opted for a joy ride in “Sho-Time” through the back channels. This blast through the granite cuts and Pine studded island nearly always pastes smiles on customers faces!!! Sho-Time…..ALWAYS DELIVERS!! Thanks Skeeter!!
