    Lost a friend last night in a boating accident on Rainy lake after leaving the Thunderbird Resort. If you have a kill switch please wear it. Prayers for Scott and his Family.

    Local man killed in boating accident

    At 10:07 p.m. Aug. 11, 2011, the Koochiching County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a boating accident somewhere in the area of Sportsman’s Dock, Rainy Lake.

    When deputies arrived they were informed by a number of good Samaritans who had already recovered a boat with a single male occupant. Deputies were informed that there was another male in the water.

    A search was conducted and the body of Scott Michael Skifstrom, age 48, of International Falls, was recovered. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

    The other occupant, A.J. Helgerson, age 34, of Minneapolis, was transported to the Rainy Lake Medical Center hospital campus.

    The accident is still under investigation.

    This is very sad news indeed. Scott was a highly respected fisherman here on Rainy Lake. My understanding is the boating accident is still under investigation. Scott’s passenger is also very banged up. Our prayers are sent to both families in this very difficult time.
