The fam and I are heading up next weekend to stay on an island somewhere near jackfish bay. A friend at work suggested a spot that is about 30 miles east. The crestliner will make it that far but I think I’ll save the gas and stay on the west side. Am I making the right choice? There has to be fish somewhere to the west. The map I have shows tons of structure everywhere. Let me know what you think.
Second question… how effective are plastics vs. live bait? I know live is hard to beat this time of year. I havent read much about it in reports lately. I plan on picking up some fat heads and crawlers but it would be fun to try a few artificials too.
Should be a fun trip. Thanks for any insite.

Plastics will be tough this time of year unless you are able to pin the fish down shallow. As far as fishing areas go both west and east are going well. With that being said there is a lot of nice structure that was a big producer last year, yet to turn on this year. We’ve had great success with fatheads. The Rainy Lake One Stop has a real nice selection of bait right now. Have a great trip!!

Thanks for the help. If we did make a long run, what is the availability of fueling up on the water? There must be somewhere near jackfish bay that has gas. Sha Sha? Thanks

Both Sha-Sha resort and Thunderbird resort have gas on the lake. Fishing was very good the last couple days in 10-15 feet of water. Both days produced 20-25 fish over 20 inches. You should have your trip timed well!!
