The Rainy Lake Walleyes continue to become more concentrated with our water temperatures warming. Our Mayfly hatch hasn’t been too widespread thus far. We’ve found big concentrations of walleyes in a somewhat nuetral mood on inside turns within first line breaks in the last couple days. Dragging jigs and fatheads continues to turn 40-50 walleyes a day.
Yesterday found another group of customers with a very nice limit of walleyes, and some very impressive slot fish. Biggest walleye of the day was 25 inches on the bones. Vane also landed a bonus 36 inch pike obviously out feeding on walleyes (That’s #53 over 10lbs since May 1st!!)
Anglers need to continue to track the changing food sources. A strong south wind had select south facing turns holding big concentrations of fish. I’ve included a pic of a walleye who lost his lunch boatside unveiling this 6 inch ciscoe. Some big walleyes evidently have started feeding on main basin ciscoes, while others are focusing on a fly hatch.
When the fish find an ample supply of forage it becomes critical for fisherman to tighten up their game while slowing down presentations. Yesterday I saw 2 boats come through an area we landed close to 30 walleyes. Neither boat landed a single fish, yet did look a bit frustrated with our net continually in the water. Both boats edged as close as they dared not knowing in this particular case it wasn’t the spot, but the presentation that needed a slight adjustment.
When I refer to “Dragging Jigs” I am talking about literally dragging that jig through the rock piles or mud. A high quality graphite rod is highly suggested and lacing it up with a braid like Powerpro will greatly enhance your feel.
The BITE IS ON!! Look for this bite to grow stronger and stronger throughout the summer as the fish start to pod up in larger numbers.
