OK!! After looking through the Spring houseboat pics AGAIN…….FOR LIKE 2 hours!! I can’t help but get excited for our upcoming fall Houseboat trip.
Fall HIGHLY ADVERTISED by the “Daze” Staff is no doubt my personal favorite time to fish Rainy lake. Locals in large part are at their hunting shacks while much of the summer tourist traffic is over as our “Chillins” head back to school. I do however request no more 30 mph blows to start off our trip!!
I plan on fishing big slabs probably half of the time this year with half of the time chasing that 33 inch walleye.
Holst you out there???
****Please if you would be so kind “Great OZ of IDO” post details on the fall excursion AGAIN as we’ve been receiving info on departure times/dates, Costs, Details, Shoreluch?? Contests??….. as well as availability for full boats or singles……..
I’ve been making the assumption we still have boats available??
Again our limit is 10 houseboats at a great deal through Rainy Lake Houseboats stacked with 60 “In Depth” anglers. We’ll be running east into Voyageurs National Park in search of the BEAST!! I will be in attendance for the trip and my boat is full. I am only running half day trips to attempt to steer as many anglers as possible in the right direction for awesome fall fishing!! I’d like to request a Fall Steak Grill out on the back of the houseboats!! Maybe have a couple Mid-day “Meat and Greets” where we can shake each others hands and talk FISH!! A Fall Harvest “Cool One” washing down a VNP burned Steak is literally is about as good as it gets for this guy!! I also think it would be cool James if we can film this trip for a special edition Episode?? “The Men of Fall IDO Tackling Rainy Lake BEASTS!!”
****Fall fishing Rainy Lake;****** We field fishing questions daily. Still the most common question revolves around SUPER SIZED WALLEYES!! Not buckets of 11-13 inchers. Many anglers are very curious when it comes to boating Elite caliber Walleyes. The answer most always if FALL IF YOU CAN DO IT!! I plan on sharing some of our insight when it comes to tackling the biggest and baddest in our pre-launch seminar. Still here is a general response we give to our fisherman. “I look at LANDING elite sized fish like hunting big bucks during the Rut!! Forget the “Lip Service” of the fishing industry for a second. Sure anytime your on the water or in the woods you have the chance to bag your trophy. Still many anglers or hunters realize stacking the deck can give you the perfect hand!! When fall rolls in big walleyes are triggered to feed………PERIOD!! VERY SIMPLE TO GRASP. Much the same as that big buck becomes vulnerable only briefly through the entire year during the first week in November. Your job if you want to get the big one……..BE THERE!! There is no substitute for time on the water or in the woods!! In Minnesota we aren’t able to fish the spawn cycle, so fishing our best time to land the elite sized fish is during what we refer to as the “Feedbag Cycle” Gentleman………It is as good as it gets!! The largest walleyes realize they must devour as much food as possible to build up sufficient fat reserves to survive the mid-winter slowdown. I would never suggest Fall as the timeframe for the biggest overall numbers of fish (That is July/August), but would always point to Fall for your best chance of landing your new PB walleye!!”
My personal biggest walleye was landed late September and measured 32.5 inches and weighed a healthy 13lbs on the beans!! We had 6 other fish over 27 inches in that 3 other fish over 29 inches in that 3 day period. I start each day in the fall with a goal of topping my own PB!! I believe fall is my best chance of doing so. BRING ON FALL BABY!!
Here is sampling of a few of our 2010 “Fall Footballs” of which only one of these fish were UNDER 28 inches (Dinky 26.5!!) We ended up landing 23 walleyes over 28 inches last fall. This is actually a bit off from our previous year due in large part to some inclimate weather conditions. Don’t think for a second weather won’t play a big role in fishing success. You simply cannot control the weather conditions, but I assure you when we get cool, but stable weather these big Rainy Lake Walleyes are flat out ANGRY!!
