Ben and Adam came up and fished with me yesterday. They said originally they wanted to CPR a large pike. DING…….DING BABY!! I know people pay huge money traveling to far reaches of Canada for big pike. Well I think many of our customers realize we offer trophy caliber pike fishing on top of elite walleye fishing. After todays outing we CPR’d 47 pike OVER 10lbs and 19 pike OVER 40 inches!! The bell was rung and the cute little gal held up ROUND 1 before we started hucking baits!! Let the BEATDOWN begin! Dealing with a massive coldfront coupled with 20-30mph winds we weren’t sure exactly what to expect. Our temperatures had fallen roughtly 25 degrees from the previous day and we were dealing with a straight heavy north wind. Water temperatures fell close to 2 degrees. Only a few casts into the day Ben looked at me WIDE EYED and yelled “DUDE…..That was a 45-50 inch Muskie Bright RED FINS!! She just followed me boatside!!! OH MY GOD!!” Muskies being rare on the US side I knew this fish must be following a massive amount of bait…..eater walleyes. We then simply started hammering the fish. We never did see that Muskie again, but all 3 of us ended up landing and releasing a pike reaching or exceeding 40 inches!! We CPR’d 5 massive pike (38,38.5,40,40.5 and 40.5!!) We also landed another 7 pike in that 7-8lb class. With that many pike around some anglers would expect the walleye fishing to be sub-par….On the contrary we landed close to 60 walleyes. 25 of these beautiful golden Rainy Lake Walleyes were in that 20-24 inch class. We kept a limit of eater sized fish (14-16.5 inches). By days end the whole crew was exhaused and my conservation series net from Frabill was ready to “Tap Out”. Pretty productive 8 hours on the water.
We fished very aggressively on windblown rock points. Anglers need to keep in mind no matter what they have read. Fish will tell you what they want. These fish followed some perch, and we fed them perch imitations until they wanted to puke. Stickbaits or plastics……..Pick your Poison……..Just loosen your drag!!
I’d like to give a huge shout out to both Ben and Adam on both landing their personal best pike on our 8 hour trip. Congratulatons men!! Thank you for once again utilizing Rainydaze Guide Service. We’ll see you boys this winter and again next June!!
We’ve got many pics and even some video of the action. Maybe the highlight of the trip took place as Adam and I were talking in the front of the Skeeter. I said to Adam “What I love most about fishing trophy caliber waters when you’ve dialed in a pattern is literally every cast can produce that next TANK!!” In mid-sentence Adam was smashed by another 38.5 inch pike which shot out of the water like a trained dolphin at “Seaworld”. Good Stuff!!
Great trip Boys!!
