Ri-Donk-Ulous Rainy Slabs!!

After catching more than our share of big pike and walleyes in the last couple days I asked our newly appointed “Beast Tamers” if they would like to saddle up some big Slabs!! This didn’t take much convincing (Imagine that!!), and by 2pm we were laced up for some of Rainy Lakes infamous JET BLACK Crappies. We chose to utilize the simpy deadly spawn period 1/32 oz. flu-flus from Custom Jigs and Spins. Our customers tipped the small flu-flus with minnows while I often opted to fish the jig without bait. We worked submerged rock piles and simply lit up the “DONKS”. 22 Crappies were kept between the 4 of us as we each looked to keep enough for a nice meal. At 4:30pm we called it a day and they wer still going strong!! Our biggest “DONK” was 15.5 inches and over 2lbs (Released)!! Bulk of the fish were 12.5 to 13 inches with a few 11’s and (1) 14 incher.

Remember Crappies not only feed on minnows, but also love to focus on bug hatches. The Flu-flu from Custom jigs and spins allows anglers to match a hatching bug/fly, or dangle a minnow. When fishing a drastic warming period this is a perfect time to fish a plain Flu-Flu. You can be assured hatches are being triggered with the warmth of the spring sunny day. Often times this small feathered jig will outproduce a minnow tipped jig. (Think twice about sharing this with your buddy….Your don’t want to lose your personal “Extreme Net Man!!”)

My wife is hoping those “donks” are still going in 13 days. I’m hoping my wife is happy with my Rainy Lake “vacation substitution” for Maui this winter, in 13 days. . Thanks for the pix and report.

I think your safe Goose!! Surely she has a better chance catching a crappie on Rainy Lake rather than in Maui. That’s how my brain works on that substitution.

Let me know how that goes for ya!!

As far as the Crappies rolling in 13 days?? My guess is they will be tailing off. 2 weeks of good spawn action crappies is pretty good NORMALLY if there even is NORMAL with Crappies!!

Fun stuff, isn’t it? I love catching big Crappies in the spring. One more point about flu-flu’s, they have a nice small wire hook that sets with very little effort. You don’t need a super strong hook to land panfish so why are so many little jigs made with heavy wire hooks? A fine wire hook does better job.

    Beautiful fish Chris!

Great point Rootski!! We’re using ultra-light tackle and still only need a light sweeping hookset for these big slabs!!
