Shallow Water Walleyes/Rainy Lake

Everybody seems to have their own favorite patterns for catching May walleyes. For me I would prefer to fish shallow fish as long as possible. The fish release well and fight like crazy. There are tremendous bites taking place in 3-5 f.o.w.. The Sand/boulder transition areas have been stacked with fish. Emerging weedlines are also starting to attract forage fish giving up some nice eyes. When working these shallow areas you can either work stickbaits or cast jigs and plastics. The results can be simply unreal!!

I hope this bite continues for a while. It doesn’t get much better than that thump you get casting for shallow eyes. Will be heading up to the Canadian side of Rainy on June 1. Keep the reports coming. I can hardly wait to get up there again. Have done summer and fall trips but this will be my first spring trip.

I’ll be up in that general area next thursday and friday. If you see a Skeeter 2100 with a 300 Yamaha that ISN’T Granrud… that’d be me. Give a wave.

I will be the guy in the 20 foot Champion – hat on backwards – going 73MPH with a huge grin on my face!!!!

If you see the rooster tail or hear the whine of my 225 ponies – wave – you will know I am burning about 1 gallon every 3.2 miles.

And loving every minute of it.

If you are fishing in the American Channel – between the two markers – please have the courtesy to get out of the way. You don’t play catch on 35W or 94W – do you?

I am really not looking forward to that stupid conversation – again.

I look for the shallow water bites to just get stronger over the next couple weeks. As my grandpa used to tell me “When the oak leaves are the size of Squirrel ears the Walleyes will be actively feeding”. A guy can come to his own complex conclusions on moonphase/water Temp/stars aligning, but this simple statement is most always right on the $$.

Here is another one I have always noticed. When you see your first green bullrushes…….Crappies will be spawning.
