When the warm weather arrived so did the WIND!! We were pike fishing yesterday when Rainy Lake became “Windy Lake”.

Anglers must never underestimate these 220,000 acres of water. It can go beautiful to ugly very quickly. Be smart and be safe out there this weekend guys. We literally went from nearly calm conditions to 30mph gusts in a matter of minutes. I was running the Terrova 101 between 6-7 while customers wisely tightened their hats “Hucking” for big Pike!! Needless to say Pike fishing was much slower yesterday landing only around 15 compared to 30-35 in the previous days. Big blows have a way of stirring up the bottom content to the extent fish have a tough time seeing your presentations. Our biggest fish of the day measured a respectable 37 inches and weighed 13.4lbs. All of our pike we’ve caught and released have been post-spawn, and a nice gentle water temperature warm up should provide a productive spawn cycle for 2011!!!

Lake levels are in good shape for early in the season from what I’ve seen, but remember this is Rainy Lake which also is known by many as Rocky Lake. Running safe navigational routes with your big motor search while searching with your small motor is ALWAYS a nice plan. Seems every season I find a few more rocks I didn’t know about, but fortunately they’ve been with the Bow Mount. I swear we are growing them.

    Best of luck this weekend!!
