Don’t kid yourself pal. A mid-teens pike is a very nice fish. Fortunately a 10-14lb pike is not all that uncommon when the stars align on Rainy Lake. Last year we boated over 50 pike that exceeded 10lbs with only 1 that pushed over 20lbs. This year (ICE FISHING INCLUDED) we’ve already landed 8 pike over 10lbs, but 3 that have exceeded 20lbs!! Fish upwards of the 25lb threshold are NOT out of the question here, and definately in our crosshairs starting tomorrow.
If I can give one piece of advise to anglers fishing for big Gators it would be to drive the hook home and then take it easy. Too often if anglers are fortunate enough to hook “The BIG ONE” they simply put too much tension on the fish which eventually leads to hooks pulling out. I always fight every fish as though it was barely hooked. I believe highly in back reeling in addition to my drag system. An effective back reel will nearly eliminate that sharp pull that will rip hooks loose, and when the run like a torpedo your drag will be your insurance policy!!
Good Fishing Team!! Again we highly suggest handling these fish with great care, and releasing unharmed. These fish are capable of growing to an elite class, and replicas last forever!! So do the fish this way!!
