The “Search and Destroy” helped Cheryl and I begin installation of our new floating Dock system yesterday. We later slipped out for a little fishing. We ended up landing 8 pike with the majority of the fish in that 5-6lb class (Not Tankers, but not dinks) kept a couple for a nice baked dinner. We also quickly released a fat 23 inch walleye full of spawn along with a spawned out 28 3/4 inch walleye!! Keep in mind many times these extremely large walleyes are caught with the targeted pike. Immediate release is mandatory prior to the state fishing opener for Walleyes. Our big pike are simply a warm day or two from “GO TIME”. I watched one of the largest pike I’ve personally every laid eyes on surface 10-12 times a couple days ago seemingly devouring either perch or small pike. She ended up coming within about 30 feet of me, but just couldn’t get a bait in front of her. I would estimate her length pushing 45 inches MINIMUM. I can’t rule out that she wasn’t a muskie, but I’ve never seen a Muskie in US waters here on Rainy. I assume she was the “Show” the “Freak we Seek”. I assure you we know her whereabouts and will be after her for a simple photo session!! Our lake levels are much higher than last year and we are getting dumped on right now. Going to be great Pike fishing over the next couple weeks!!

Does the season not close on Rainy Lake? I might need to keep that in mind for a pre-opener trip next year.

Northern Pike are open all year. Walleye closes in the middle of April and opens again on the traditional Minnesota Fishing opener. Some of the greatest pike fishing of the year often times is often times in the end of April into May.

    Chris,
Some years ago I fished out of Camp Narrows in Canada (Rainy Lake) in July. I definitely saw a 4 foot plus Musky
follow my spinnerbait to the boat. Bass/Walleye was slow, but topwater Pike up to 39″ really made for a fun trip!

Although we went through a LOT of Pop Rs & Spooks…

Few things rival the fury of early season pike fishing. After convincing those big slabs to bite late ice I love the change of pace fishing Giant Gators.

Lots of fun Tom!! I can’t say for certain what I saw was a pike versus a Muskie, but I can say it was MASSIVE!!
