Camouflage in the northwoods

Took a few hours to hike the ridges for sheds this afternoon. Those sheds eluded my best guess on buck wintering grounds, but spent a few minutes watching this ruffed grouse. Seems this grouse thought her camouflage was pretty darn good. I love watching the wildlife in natural settings. I’ve also included a pic of a snowshoe in a snow white gown.

a few years ago while out dog training with some guys we actually caught a female grouse. I don’t know what it is but it seems like this time of the year they’re really docile/stupid..maybe protecting nests?

Could be. Seems those same grouse are incredibly smart when I’m packing a shotgun. Then when deer hunting we’re buddies again!!

I hear that!! There is no better game bird IMO than the ruffed Grouse. We don’t get out to hunt them much as I’m guiding through the end of October, but I usually sneak out for a few days prior to deer camp. Great tablefare!!!

Ive been brushing my hillside and the last 2 days doing it, ive came within 10 feet of a grouse, with the chainsaw running. Just figured this one was either deaf or really stupid!

Sounds like we’ll need to sneak up on Grouse this October with the Chainsaw running!! LOL!! Yes I’m going with NOT very smart birds. I’ve run into them many times in the BWCA too. Again one of my favorite gamebirds though.

Been awhile since I’ve had any Rabbit. Back when I was a kid we loved them mixing them in with a bag of pheasants. Now I think my wife would kill me if a four legged “Friend” came home in the game pouch!! Does the OJ nuetralize the wild taste Jake?? I’ve heard people mention that for other wild meat as well.
