Draggin’ Moxies

I look to lace up some of the 4 inch Moxies early this summer on Draggin’Jigs. The thin profile of the Draggin jig allows anglers to work plastics in tight spots. Emerging weed beds and small rock piles that hold some of the larger female walleyes early in the season are very vulnerable to plastics such as the Moxie from Custom Jigs and Spins. I believe the weed guard wires will shed much of the snags you would receive with a typical jig and plastic presentation. Going very light will enable anglers to finesse a bigger profile bait in shallow water.

I laced one up today and took a number of casts into a very snag filled enviornment. This combination could be lethal here in May!!

That looks very appetizing Chris. very nice profile to it! Also, looks like a BWCA Smallmouth Killer!!! I am excited to try these up on Basswood lake on the opener. I have a feeling they will be lethal.

Could also be deadly on lethargic largemouths that sit in weedmat pockets in summer, or out on deep rocks…NICE THINKING!!!!

Try them out guys!! Talking with James this past week I discussed my love for working plastics yet the issues I often have when these fish are holding in emerging weeds and rocks. I can’t work it as slow as it takes at times and the snags hurt overall numbers of fish. I believe this set up will allow us to work a very slow seductive presentation while the water is cool.

I also think lacing this up on a rod as a trail bait will also be employed in the “FishCasket” this season. Too often guys will snap the aggressive fish out of a spot and move over fish a bit more nuetral. The Nuetral fish might inhale the plastic!! Getting bit twice as much means less moving and more fishing!!

I bet they will be KILLER on Basswood Grant!! In fact I would use that precise color combo or maybe even mix in a Orange head. That thin profile jig head allows you to work through rocks with much less hanging up. Lord knows these lakes have a few rocky shorelines!!

I haven’t found much that doesn’t eat ringworms. I should clarify this though, all these fish were caught on ringworms – not moxies. But with the success stories I am seeing/hearing, I can’t imagine the moxies wouldn’t work better for a slower presentation through the weeds. These were random pics I pulled from fishing ringworms in the weeds on WI/MI border lakes from 2005 to current.

FYI – the pig was a freak kill. It was hooked in the gills and was spewing blood really bad. 26-1/2″ We had her mounted and donated to the cabin.

Holy gray hair, I didn’t realize I have aged so much in 6 years

Joe’s in St. Paul has them. Everts carries them but currently they’re closed for the high water. Not sure where else to send you. I always just order online.

Thanks. I’m always up for a road trip to Joe’s.

I’ll be casting on Namakin and Kab. for Smallmouth and Pike. Two questions.

    1) Would these run OK with a leader or will it defeat the action?

    2) Colors?

    Hey Brian,

I wouldn’t run a leader with them personally. Yes you may very well donate a few to pike. IF you do decide to run a leader when in big pike territory you’d be best served with a hand tied leader material that has more flex allowing more action. Probably run a small clasp at the jig.

The Chartruesse/Orange core I believe is a color James used up here with ringworms last year. Rainy and Vermillion colors for shallow fish should also work well on Kab. With Kabs perch population your best perch imitations should be dynamite up shallow. I believe the larger body will better imitate juvenile perch than even the ringworm.

Also thanks to all the PM’s regarding the Moxies and colors. You guys are the best!
