Got back late last night from the western basin of Erie. Fished hard Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
The weather on Friday was cold, windy, and snowing. The lake was pure mud from West Sister Island all the way to “E” can. We tried trolling cranks north of the reefs and along the can line but no takers. We headed over to the reefs infront of Davis Besse. We drifted jigs tipped with shinners there and managed to pull one jack about 5 lbs.
Saturday, the wind was ripping in the morning and the lake was 2-4’s. We were going to try north of kelley’s but decided to go fish the Sandusky bay. Launched out of the Dempsey Access area. Headed down the bay to the railroad bridge and anchored right next the bridge piling. Veritcal jigging Vib e’s produced 11 eyes for us, the biggest about 9 pounds. 3/4 oz. Char/Silver and Char/Gold were are hot colors.
Sunday we fished the WWA Tournament out of Catawba, we decided to make the run to the bay. Same program as saturday produced 2 10#, 1 9# and about 25-30 5-6#. We got to the bridge at 8:45 and were culling fish by 10. The bite was amazing. The best method for us was a slow vertical jig, from the bottom to about 24-30″ off the bottom. The biggest thing was the slow jig speed, they seemed to like the slow thump of the vib e. Our box of 5 fish, 40.15lbs. was good enough to get us 2nd place. The first place team had 44.?? with their big fish going 14 plus.
