    Jonny:

Seeing that your Grandpa has seen nearly 80 years of ice on Upper Red, and his dad before him saw another lifetime of it, what’s Grandpa Jim’s prediction for first ice up there?

I know you were fishing up there last year at around this time, and I also know that good first-ice can suddenly go bad with just a little bit of a west wind out there. That said, I’m going to go with my gut on this one that he’s the authority on the subject.

Well I mentioned your question to Jim and of course I got this message:

    Quote:

“You mean to tell me with all that big city education, university access and computer stuff he can’t figure out when it gets cold the lake will freeze. Tell Nelson he can walk out next week, he may get wet but he can walk out, I’ll even show him where to go”

Of course after he got done chuckling he said

    Quote:

“tell him when it gets cold and we have always been out by the 20th December even on bad years, except for once when ice fishing was only a couple weeks long due to poor ice that flooded and remained unfishable all winter”.

Then he called you some name , smiled and went back to grinding venison.

In my opinion once it cools off it is going to happen fast, to the point it is going to surprise us.

    I wouldn’t expect anything less!

He’s seen it all, hopefully he can conjure up some ice for us.
