I’m bored… Q&A time on Upper Red Lake?

OK hunting has been brutal and the ice is hiding somewhere in Canada for the time being so I thought I would open a good old question and answer bit to pass the time while I wait for ice. So lets have it; any question silly or serious you may have about fishing Upper Red Lake summer or winter I will answer them if I can when I come in for the evening.

This should be interesting and keep me busy, maybe even keep me out of trouble…

When is a good time to come up for some walleye fishing through the ice? Is the fishing better early or late season?

What time will the sun rise and set on Jan. 25th 2010 on Upper Red Lake? Will the fishing be any good on this day between sunrise and sunset? will the ramps be open at Everts?

A very small window of pike will happen at first ice then the HUGE feeding time happens again in Feb before the close of the Minnesota Walleye/Pike season. Of course in March thoses toothy critters raise all kinds of heck with the perch and crappie fisherman.

Normally our walleye bite is very consistent. I do have to say we do see more bigger fish as the season extends into winter but don’t worry about the walleye bite on red, especially if you are guided by one of the reputable guides in the area. They will always be on walleye with their toes into the crappie country.

Jan 25, 2010 at Waskish rise will be at 7:44 AM and the sunset will be 5:15 PM making for a 9 hour 30 minutes 54 seconds long day with the sun at an angle or altitude 26.2°. So fishing should be good, of course fishing is always as good as you make it.

For the Everts Ramp best to check out Everts on the Mississippi river in Hager WI. directly for ramp conditions- evertsfishingresort.com

OH and thanks for the fifty bucks jjkrooked, I bet fifty clams it would take four posts for some one to be a smart arse, you did it in three.

    Its about time somebody asked.

No you will not, drive up spending hundreds if not thousands on gas, lodging, bait, tackle, gear but render it all useless since you left the 12.99 extension at home finding yourself three inches short of drilling all the way through.

Sadly I see it at least once a week during the late season. Guy flags my plow truck down as if somebody in his party has had a heart attack as he runs up to the drivers door puffing and panting in excitement “Oh am I glad to see you, we didn’t bring the extension and can’t get through”

So what’s the cost per hole if someone forgets their extension, waves you down and asks JP save the day?

Being I only work out of the Hillmans road if you have a Hillmans Road pass its free with the pass! If you don’t have a Hillmans pass…well that gets interesting but you can bet my auger gas just got really exspensive.

You should see the cost of getting pulled out of a snow drift or needing a jump start without a road pass, those with the pass get better zero cost treatment then AAA.

Just one more reason why it is a good, no GREAT, idea to take care of the resorts that maintain the roads on a given body of water. When you need it most the “lake guys” will be there for you.

Good to see you over here Giss!!!

The best part about this question is that it’s the gift that keeps on giving. Start sometime in November and keep asking until June.

Actaully we have been bad ridge free for a couple years now making for easy plowing conditions, hence all “new roads” popping out from shore. I would have to bet we are going to have a nasty ridge or two this year, we are due.

been a few years since the crew was up there, but we liked was the variety of fish you would catch in one area, we had some perch just a couple inches short of what we like to keep, have you noticed an increase in numbers and quality of perch?

The perch are becoming a great target species for Upper Red Lake in the late winter season. We are starting to see a steady 9-11″ fish once you get into them. Of course when the perch are going nobody is around, last year a handful of us got together and used sleds to go chase perch and we had the entire lake to ourselves. We did find some decent perch but the numbers where down as we stumbled into a few crappies and the perch got sidelined.

What’s the best way to get from St Paul to Waskish?

(I’ve got a couple ideas on this one. Interested in what JP comes up with.)

I go 35E-35 to Moose Lake then take 73 through to HWY 2 through Grand Rapids to 46 through Northome then 1 to Shooks and then Waskish. Only down fall is if you are pulling a trailer 73 is very rough.

Ya, I really like the drive from Deer River to Northome.

But I do despise the stretch from Moose Lake to Floodwood, so I usually take 169 to Grand Rapids, then follow your route from there.

Anyhow, some of the Best ways to get from St Paul to Waskish are:

    1. In someone else’s vehicle, burning someone else’s gas, with someone else doing the driving.

    2. Private aircraft . . . weather permitting of course

    3. Star Trek molecular teleportation device

    4. In the “Bikini Ice Fishing Team” RV

And the ABSOLUTE Best way to get from St Paul to Waskish . . .

    . . . any way you can

When I came home with a load of bear bait (four ton worth)I took the 169 route like you said and it was a good drive even with that heavy load on. Of course I am a bit biased as I have other intentions on the way home, ya have to stop at Glenns Army Navy and make sure no deals are going down, then run into L&M Fleet in the Rapids for whatever rural life calls for then Deer River a stop at River Rat Bait is must, a definite must if you plan on fishing big pike, and few other stops here there and all over. It normaly takes me a day to get home.
