We are already well into the first
week of 2009, we have been busy as
the snow and wind just keeps coming.
We got another 5-6″ yesterday so more
plowtruck duty for me today. The “eyes”
were a bit spotty the last couple days
with some have decent action and others
pretty slow. Some nice pike here and
there and a few bonus crappie. Walleye
have been hard to pattern some days a
good day bite, some evenings and late
nite action. Roads-ice in geat shape!!

We actually may see the sun for a
third day in a row! Of course we
    may get more snow tonite-tomorrow.
    Fishing is pretty good considering
all the fronts that have been moving
    through. Some having good walleye
fishing while average is slow and
steady action with a few crappies
still showing up and quite a bit of
pike activity. Roads and ice in very
good shape heading into week-two 2009

Finally, a weekend without some sort
of storm! A very nice weekend in fact,
plenty of sun & light winds. The bite
was perhaps not hot but pretty good
overall for many. We had lots of happy
fishermen stopping in and except for
two shacks our rentals hit good walleye
fishing this weekend! While we were still
catching fish in 10-12′ water the 13-14′
depths (about 1 to 1-1/2 miles out) gave
up most of the fish. Not many crappie
cooperated but plenty of big pike were
    cruising around. Sounds like bitterly
cold much of the week but moderating by
next weekend. Just six weekends left in
    the winter walleye season!!

Brrrr! With temps 30 to 40 below zero
most nights and 10-15 below during the
day the traffic on the lake has been
pretty slow. Those fishing are catching
fish so the cold has not shut down the
bite. We expect a warm-up by Friday &
weekend temps sound pretty good. We are
still doing good in the 13-14′ water &
still getting walleye in the 9-11′ also.
    Looking forward to above zero!!!!!!!!!!

We had some squalls move through with
    snow and wind Friday night-Saturday
morning and again Sunday am but other-
wise the weather cooperated fairly well
this past weekend. The milder temps were
much appreciated, but with all of the
changing weather the walleye bite was
not consistent. While some managed limits
many encountered slower action. There are
a few crappies showing up in some houses
and some nice pike also reported. There
are still walleye being caught in the 8
to 10′ depths as well as the 14′ waters
mostly on rattle reels and dead sticks
with jigs or bare hook & minnow. We are
down to just five weekends left in the
walleye-pike season, make sure to get out
    and wet a line!!!

Fished Sunday to Monday 18th-19th out of Mort’s. Great folks, extremely nice rented a sleeper house for night. Similar results 5 eaters between 1:30pm and 5:00pm. I’m new to Red, but was dissappointed that the night bite and early a.m. bite were not existent where we were at. Is this the norm or just bad timing of year? We didn’t have a hit from 5:00 pm till we left at 11:00am the next morning SLOOOW! Everything caught was on deadsticks. One guy would jig the whole time. Don’t know if that brought them in or not. One ?. The water was extremely murky but not overall dirty. Couldn’t see 3ft with the camera. Had a gentelmen stop in and chat and said he could see fine 3 weeks ago. Is this a turnover thing or pressure created or is there current? Just curious if that may have made things tough for the eyes and dark. The fish caught were in great shape, huge bellies – obviously eating well. Had a great time and will be back – Thanks Mort.

The mild temps sound like they are
about to end by tomorrow as subzero
numbers are on the way. While a few
limits are coming off the walleye
bite still has not fully rebounded
to be what we had before the last
cold spell as many are finding the
action on the slow side. Just a few
crappie reported but a fair amount
of northern action. While most are
fishing the 13-14′ depths we are
catching fish in the 9-11′ waters
also mostly on dead sticks. Jigging
is important to “bring in” fish tho!

Sounds like a little milder weather
on the way for this weekend after
another cold snap. While the walleye
action has not been fast & furious
for everyone this week it has been
pretty good for many. They continue
to bite in the 14′ waters but I think
the action in the 9-10′ depths (just
a 1/2 mile out) has been just as good!
I expect a fair amount of traffic this
weekend and then some early departures
so folks can get home for kick-off of
the Super Bowl Sunday evening. Just 4
weekends left in the walleye season
