Now that deer hunting season is almost over, it’s time to switch gears and start thinking about ice fishing season! After hearing that Upper Red was beginning to freeze over mid week, we took a drive around some of the lakes in the Blackduck area on Wednesday. Blackduck Lake, Benjamin, Gilstad and Rabideau previously had a skim coat of ice on them, but on Wednesday with the wicked winds they were all wide open. But the wind died down and we had a couple of really cold nights and as of yesterday (Friday, Nov. 21) they were all frozen over. Didn’t venture out yet to check any depths since these lakes just froze over. Heard that Third River on Winnie has some ice, and Upper Red is starting to form the ice pretty good, with it measuring in the 3-5″ range…still early though! But hopefully the weather gods will keep the snow away and keep bringing us the temps we need.
