Greetings from DNR Fisheries in Bemidji:
Attached is a summary of angling regulations pertinent to the upcoming winter season on Upper Red Lake. This document is intended to help you answer questions about where anglers can go and what they can do on the ice. Specifically, regulations pertaining to eating fish on the ice are summarized.
Unfortunately, the fish consumption issue has become very confusing as we begin the winter season. At this time, we are recommending that anglers retain carcasses of any fish they eat as documentation of their catch; however, this is not required by law. At some point during the winter, that may change, and anglers on Upper Red might be required to retain measurable carcasses of any walleye or northern pike that have been consumed. If that happens, we will definitely contact as many people as we can to get the word out. Also, please remember that disposing of fish carcasses on or under the ice is illegal.
Good luck, and I hope everyone has a great winter!
Sincerely,
Andy Thompson
