Anyone have a recent report for upper red lake? Headed up at the end of the week with my in-laws, hoping to catch a few walleyes and northerns. Any tips would also be greatly appreciated. I am really a bass guy so even the obvious tips will help me out!!

If it is too wavy to get out in the lake fish the river.

the best reports we have so far is- the crappies are scattered and hardly bitting, the gators are there but the bite has been on and off some days, early morning at day break (and I mean daybreak, not 10am) and early evening before dark, the river is a great place durning the heat or wind during the day, lots of eyes still coming out while trolling-under the bridge about 3/4 of a mile up has been holding eyes and sheep head action- Im just guessing but the water in the river seems to have a good 3-4 ft depth average

we have reports that sunnies are getting caught once in a great while-, we heard rumors of them being in there but never saw anycaught 2 years ago

Working the rock piles with a jig and minnow has worked all summer.Trolling spinner/little joes with a minnow along the breaks and sand bars has always produced fish. Troll for pike with anything big along the break lines.Work the cribbs as if your ice fishing may produce a crappie or two

I’m heading up there over Labor Day weekend.

Are there any seasonal transitional changes that I should be aware of around that time?

Cookie, thanks for the great tips!

well you may have the lake and river pretty much to yourself

    seasonal changes

Wild Rice is one of the main crops there in the bog and there probaly picking that now, you may find a lot of it in the river which makes fishing tough

Duck Season is just around the corner and after the rice is picked they set up duck blinds, and man they get ducks

also Bear Season is coming, and there pretty busy baiting them critters

I havent fished Red in the fall-sorry

Westwinds August 13 reportTis the season for Northerns. The big pike have been very aggressive. They have been in deeper water in front of the mouth of the tamarac river (7-9 ft). And right on the break line of 4-6 ft on the north shore near ditch 5. Trolling big cranks with holographic silver and orange colors around 2 mph seem to work the best. Make sure you get your lure to the bottom to find the big ones. Walleye have been harder to find lately but are still on the rock and in deeper water (11-14 ft). The gravel bars on the north shore have also been doing good for walleye and perch. An occational crappie will show up here and there and the sheephead are everywhere!! Good Luck!!
