Was up Saturday to get my house off of Cass Lake and to check on my house on Red after the big blow… The roads were in really good shape considering the previous 36 hours. Getting off the road can be fairly challenging. Make sure you pick your way accordingly. Bring a shovel and pull strap. Best to bust a road in 1st if your are pulling a wheel house.
Crappie fishing remains fairly slow after all the recent weather changes… (and snow changes). Hopefully they will pick up here as they adjust t the darkness under the snow laden ice. The walleyes as usual were active, though not as much as weeks past. Glow red seemed to be the prefered color. after a fairly long conversation with the Co on Sunday morning, I realized it wasn’t only our house that was struggling to find the crappies. She reported that she saw less than 15 while checking anglers on Sunday night, and my brother’s was the only one she saw to that point on Sunday morning. On the bright side I did catch a nice 26″ walleye. That was a highlight of the abbreviated trip.
If you have a house up there and have not moved it in the last couple of weeks, you better hope that you blocked it up before the snow and drifts settled in. Many of the houses (mine included) had 3-6″ of water and slush puddling up around them due to the weight of the drifts around the house. I cranked mine up half way before I left to insure it would not flood or freeze down into the ice. It was -9 last night and is suppose to be in the teens below zero tronight… that’ll stiffen up the slush but turn it into ice around your skids or frame. Ice below my house is standing around 36″s right now… I think we’re done making ice now. Hopefully we can get some March weather to knock back the snow so we can move around on the lake and run and gun and seek out those crappies again.
I will be up this weekend with Hunter for our final trip in the house this winter. On Sunday we will pull off our house(s). It was a good season the few times I got up there, which was not even close to enough. Hopefully 2 more trips will be made after this weekend before ice out.
